Colts might want to get a REAL coach

ok seriously let me explain something. walsh built the team. he established it. seifert maintained it.

some coaches are capable of building great teams, just like some leaders are capable of building great empires. these are few. some coaches are capable of maintaining a great team. these are more common, but still valuable.

i'm not saying seifert sucks. he did well with what he was left with in SF. he had nothing here and was not the type of guy to build from scratch.

the comparison is walsh to seifert like dungy to caldwell.

he's maintained the ship but it's still a step down imo. and it was obvious tonight as two teams that are nearly identical squared off and peyton's staff simply outcoached him.

I see the point, but don't agree with it for the most part. Caldwell was very lucky to inherit a great team, but the NFL is a competitive animal. If he had large gaping holes in his ability it would have come through and been apparent prior to losing (and being out coached) the superbowl. He did a hell of a job for a rookie coach and I agree that he is not at the level of Dungy, but I do think he deserves a bit of lattitude until a more complete body of work is established.

The bottom line is not a single one of us know of Caldwell's day-to-day duties and responsibilities within the organization.

What we do know is that he led his team to the Super Bowl in his first year as a head coach. You could say that anyone could do that with Peyton Manning as signal-caller, but then you'd have to denounce Dungy as well.

Were you to poll Huddle posters prior to the game, I think most would say that Peyton Manning is one of the greatest at his position and that Caldwell is a promising new coach.

Funny how one game can sway the opinion of the masses so easily.

Nope. I'm in Winston Salem and a Wake Forrest fan. My opinion of Caldwell has always been a shitty one. If Payton wasn't the QB, they would have had a worse record that the Panthers this year.

I remember when Seifert was hired he was excited about having a chance to build his own team. He knew he won with Walsh's team and wanted to show he could do it with a team he built. 1-15 ended his dream and his chance at the HOF. He did a good job keeping a really good program together at SF. He looked very ordinary when he tried to do it on his own at Car.

Makes me wonder, has Dungy been offered a management role much like Parcells? I mean look at his career ever where he goes he establishes teams that have tremendous potential and while he might not have won many, it seems when ever he leaves his team gets back to the Super Bowl.

If he was a Personnel guy you would get the same result without him ever coaching. Makes more sense then Holmgren who sucked when he did both at Seattle. Team him up with Gruden (boy wouldn't that be ironic but a damn good match if you ask me) and you probably will have a successful FO.

Dungy retired because he wanted a job that didn't require him to be away from his family so much. Being a GM would do just that, so him coming back soon probably isn't likely.

But I agree he would be good at it.

    • Yeah, Dave doesn't seem like a "muh scheme" type of coach where he wants plays drawn up for his QB to robotically go through a preprogrammed process. He seems like more the type of coach that just wants his scheme to produce opportunities for a QB to be a playmaker. It's a scheme you'd love to play in as a QB and it's the type of scheme that should work really well for the "point guard mentality" QB they tried to sell us on Bryce being and the type of QB he was at Alabama but at the NFL level all of those physical shortcomings that seemed plainly evident to many of us on the college field are showing up in a big way. Even with his bad decisions I honestly think a lot of it is that he's struggling to see the field. I don't mean that figuratively in that he's misreading the defense or missing open receivers, I mean that literally in that I think he's struggling to see the field over the lines of 6'4"+ huge men in front of him. Reich used to talk about creating throwing lanes for Bryce to see through and holy poo... if you need throwing lanes now you've massively shrunk your opportunities. Now you're trying to play QB through a picket fence. If you watched him play at Bama, you saw him routinely drop back 10-15 yards behind the LOS to gain depth so that he could see over the scrum. You just can't do that routinely in the NFL. NFL pass rushers are just too good. Your OTs can't create that deep of a pocket.
    • This could be a breakout game for Kyle Pitts. I'm hoping for a miracle just so we have something to talk about besides the team sucking poo.
    • I don't remember a 2018 tear down. I remember the failed 2019 failed build up of the 3-4 switch which is still stuck in the 'working on the foundation' stage. I thought 2020 was closer to that but really it was just an idiot behind the wheel doing what idiots do. Poor drafting and free agents is the main problem IMO. This team hits so little on talent it's actually amazing they don't stumble over more just by accident.   I still don't think there is anything to tear down. Just a ton of easy to dump people that should happen. It's a bottom of the roster churn that reaches 2/3s the way up this roster.
