When I was in the Navy, I volunteered to be command financial counselor for a while. You would be shocked to see how many people can't manage a checking account. One guy bounced over a $1000 in checks written to the Navy exchange in a two week period. Had to work with the exchange and several others to keep him from getting in serious trouble. As part of the deal, he gave me his checkbook, and only wrote checks that I ensured there was money to cover. It amazed me that he was able to walk and chew gum at the same time.

This is probably a good option for these types of people.

Yes, and the one our walmart has is advertising a special where you can open an account for $1, I just saw it yesterday.

But most places around here will not accept checks from woodforest bank.

I wonder why?

i work for a bank. its ridiculous how people cant manage money. we charge 5 dollars for people without an account cashing our banks checks.

its a good opportunity to get checking accounts....but honestly most people are red flagged from opening accounts.....or will bounce them almost immediately anyways. or keep a penny in it so they wont get charged to cash checks.
