Okay, let me take off these homer glasses.

Carolina: #4 in Takeaways this season with our 2nd best defensive player on IR:

Carolina: #8 in total defense:

Carolina: #4 in pass defense:

My homer glasses are off. STATS DON'T LIE.

Care to post how we were against the run? Don't think that may have skewed our pass defense stats some?

Anyways, I'm sure purging 3/4 of our starting line, our starting SLB and dangling our #2 corner for trade bait will only make us better.

I freaked out about Lewis, but now that they're jettisoning anyone over 30, I'm ok with it. At least it makes sense. But we will slip down defensively some next season, bank on it.

I don't think the run defense skewed the stats. Often times our run defense was ok if not good until the 4th qtr when the depth started to show.

Teams were averaging over 120 yards rushing per game. We were pretty bad there.

#22 in defense, bad but not the worst. our entire defense stepped up late in the season after adjusting to Meeks' defense. If we had played like that all season we'd be much higher in all categories(I can't say #1 because Jets played like that all season).

I was mainly referring to your statement of the secondary being average. It's far from average.

Average secondary? Did you not watch the 2nd half of the season?

You can throw anything and everything our defense did last year out the window. No, stats don't lie but this year they won't count either. Our secondary will be average because our D-line will be average. 1/3 of the experience at LB'er is gone. I wouldn't be surprised if they too aren't considered "average" with only flashes of brilliant play.

Takeaways? Ha! How many of those takeaways were caused by Peppers?

To quote John Fox: "It's a young man's game, and part of being successful is developing young players." While you're developing, you're not good enough to be "playing without thinking", you're still learning. Just look at what we have gone through at safety while players are developing. Stop and look at what we went through in the first half of last season. The amount of development that is needed may be more than this defense can overcome. I'm not counting on our defense to be any more than average and would feel lucky if they were consistantly that.

^^

That is why football isn't run by women. Emotional and sentimental attachment cloud the judgment. I don't see a single bad move they made yesterday. Releasing Diggs made me raise my eyebrow but nothing else.

Wait, nevermind. The FO has no plan after these cuts. They all went back to the office and said "now what?"
