The draft is going to be very important...

With all the cuts that have happened the panthers now find themselvs with some gaping holes to fill and not many picks to fill them (I want to say 5 picks). That means that each pick is going to be critical in the draft, basically we can't have a bad draft this year. We have to get value at every pick. Currently we need help at WR, DE, OLB, QB, and DT. Not to mention We could use depth at guard, center, and corner. That's a lot of help and it's obvious that the FO isn't gonna go crazy in free agency.

What are your thoughts on this and who do you think could help out the most?

Let's see what the weekend holds.

From what I see from what is currently on the roster (under contract) this is the team's needs:

QB-Backup, could also be competition but with Moore going into camp as the named starter and his job to lose. No projects or draft picks needed as Cantwell already fills that role.

WR-A starter and one for depth is needed.

RB,TE,OL-All three of these positions are fine as is.

DE-Only three on the roster (not including scrubs) and at least a fourth is needed. Backup or starter to be determined.

DT-5 players under contract so only an upgrade at a starting position would be needed.

LB-Only 4 on the roster. At least 2 more needed but only in a backup role.

CB/S-5 CB on roster with two able to be backup/emerency safeties. Only 2 prue safeties on the roster but both are starters.

ST-Replacements at both K and P could be used but not an absolute need. A kickoff specialist is needed. LS seems to be set.

Now with that established (or at least my opinion), here are some thoughts about who I think could fill those needs:

QB: I think the Panthers may wait until after the draft and see if any younger QBs like Quinn, Thigpin or Linarht get cut or are offered up for minimal trade. If not they will then only go after an older and more short term FA QB.

WR: This position poses the most likelyhood of the Panthers going after a FA before the draft but Jarrett and K. Moore now have some experience. It wouldn't surprise me if they just went after a WR/PR/KR in the 2nd or 3rd round i.e. Arrelious Benn in the 2nd or Marty Gilyard or Jordan Shiply in the 3rd. The other spot might end up being a WR taken on the 3rd day like Jacoby Ford in the 4th.

DE: The Panthers first two picks in the draft will be a WR and a DE. Which will come first will depend on the players available. Jerry Hughes could be a possibility in the 2nd or Greg Hardy or Austen Lane in the 3rd.

DT: I don't see the Panthers addressing this position by either FA or the draft. More on this later.

LB: At least one 3rd day pick will be used to address this position like Roddrick Muckelroy in the 4th or Perry Riley in the 6th. The other spot could be addressed via FA, comp picks or from training camp fodder.

CB/S: Sharod Martin and CJ Wilson can play backup at S and CB so really only one backup safety is needed and I think they will address this in the draft on the 3rd day like a Myron Rolle in the 6th or as in the past maybe even from a so-called "scrub" during training camp.

ST: It would not surprise me in the least if the Panthers were to pick a kicker in the 3rd day of the draft.

**Trades

It would not surprise me at all to see the Panther trade 2011 draft picks, after the draft, to aquire some young talent from other teams. QB's like Quinn, Thigpin and Linarht or a DT like Glenn Dorsey. The 2011 draft looks to be one of if not the worst talent pools in recent history. Trading these picks now in 2010 for young players or even more draft picks could be the best option.

It's not possible to fill all the holes they created through just the draft, the team is also in some serious need of a legit WR to help out smith....(That's just not going to come from the draft for this season unless they hit the jackpot and use two picks on WR's with both ending up being good 1st year players.)

Drafting receivers is like riverboat gambling. The Eagles did well with Jackson and Maclin. The Skins did not with Thomas and Kelly. Of course, the Skins management is inept whereas the Eagles usually know what they are doing. Although, the Jevon Kearse signing by the Eagles was a stupid move. As for Skins free agency signings, virtually all of them have been piss poor. Thank God the Panthers are not owned by Daniel Snyder. Free agency signings in the NFL often disappoint compared to MLB or the NBA.

you do realize we dont have a 1st round pick

Did I say we did? I think we have a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, and 7th. I know we traded a 5th and 6th for Leonard and Tyler...the extra 6th came from the trade with Oakland last year to move back in the 7th and pick up munnerlyn. If I'm missing something someone please let me know.

Besides that I think the DT class is too deep to pass up...I would love either geno atkins or lamar Houston in the second. But then we have to address WR and DE later in the draft. We could bring back brayton and I think I saw a thread about maybe Brock. But we won't make a big splash in free agency.

I really like the potential in the younger guys who will be stepping up...but for every guy that steps up leaves an open area behind him, like the situation at LB, DE, OG, and QB. We have to bring in some guys to be backups or even push the starters...a few injuries would devastate this team right now. I know there is a long way to go but I would consider the possibility of moving back in the 2nd and grabbing up some more picks.
