Armanti Edwards

Recommended Posts

(Obnoxious ASU alum hat off, reporter hat on)

On his online journal, Appalachian State QB Armanti Edwards said the Panthers were showing more interest than any other NFL team.

The diminutive passer might need to be a WR at the next level, as many view him as a slot receiver and return man.

But Edwards said the Panthers have scheduled a private workout for him on March 18, two days after his pro day workout for all teams. There, he'll work as both a passer and a receiver.

"The Panthers have been showing a good amount of interest, more than any team," Edwards wrote on the website.

He said New England and Jacksonville have also asked for workouts, along with Indianapolis.

Edwards, who led the Mountaineers to two national titles, left school as the only player in NCAA Division I history with more than 10,000 passing yards and 4,000 rushing yards.

Armanti has become an AWESOME qb. I'm currently a student @ app state & I've watched him for all 4 years he's been here. I'd say draft him in the late 4th or 5th round. Plus, (not saying start this WR) but we now have Dexter Jackson which was Armanti's weapon here @ ASU

And if it works in Bush League college football it's bound to work in the NFL!!!!:beatdeadhorse5::beatdeadhorse5:

Here's a question, if he had never gone to App St...would this even be a thread? Would we even know who he is? Don't let homerism blind you. It takes a special QB to be successful while being small. If you think he's as talented as Brees, well...good for you. I don't think he is.

Now...another position? Sure. Draft him as a project. As an NFL QB? No thanks.

im from florida, i have no feelings towards app state. i am a gator fan. i just frequent this board often since i now live here, and it was a story involving my team and the panthers....so yes. yes it would still be a thread :D

With all the holes the Panthers have created on their defense, and needing a WR, I don't think the Panthers have the draft picks to draft a QB (at least before the 7th round). Edwards only measuring 5-11 at the Combine, and not running the 40 has moved him down the draft list, to the fringe of the 7th round. If Edwards is undrafted, hooking on with the Panthers could be a great move for him.

With the Panthers probably drafting at least in the top 10 in 2011, if Matt Moore doesn't workout this year, the Panthers will be drafting a QB in the 2011 1st round. That will probably prevent the Panthers from drafting a QB this year, unless it's at the end of the draft.

As drastically as the Panthers are cutting cost, I don't think they will spend much on a veteran backup QB ($1 million or less) this year, so it may take awhile. I don't think in any way the Panthers will pay anything like the 49ers (David Carr) or Rams (A. J. Feeley) did, at $3 million per season.

How many times have we seen the Panthers "show a lot of interest" in a player only to use them as a smoke screen?

I wont buy into any of the hype. The QB they do draft they will make sure there is little known of their intentions.

IMO

That kinda scares me when I think about it.

Yes. The kid threw for 10,000+ yards and ran for 4,000+ yards for a total of 139 touchdowns. He led his team to 2 National Championships in the division just below I-A. Helped his team beat Michigan IN the Big House. He set the I-AA QB rushing record for 1 game(in the playoffs, no less) against Richmond with 313 yards and 4 touchdowns on 31 carries! A two time recipient of the Walter Payton Award.

You think a player with those credentials wouldn't get a look from NFL teams?

I don't want him here if he is a one trick pony who wouldn't be able to take over as a starting QB. Maybe as a punt returner, DB. Like I said He is strictly an athlete and teams will only look at him as a project

See the stats above. "One trick ponies" don't put up those stats.

    • The bottom line is we saw long stretches this season where T-Mac wasn't even targeted.  He had games where he went an entire half without seeing a pass thrown his way, and it lead to a bunch of games with 5 or less targets.  If he's healthy and we're not up a stupid amount and only running the ball, I can't see him having more than a game or two next year with 5 or less targets. We were also only 22nd this year in pass attempts, and that was with a rookie #1 and no legitimate 2nd option for half the season.  And even then, we were only 46 pass attempts above 31st place. If we go into next season with T-Mac improved in his 2nd season and a healthy Coker for 17 games, there is absolutely no reason for us to not throw it more.  That right away increases both of their target totals without sacrificing any targets from each other or other players, add in them taking targets from the TEs and RBs on top of that, and your argument just doesn't hold water anymore. You can't look at targets/yards in a vacuum and think next year Coker just takes some from T-Mac.  You have to look at the team as a whole and our situations this year and then project what will happen next year. If he's healthy for 17 games, I'd bet my life savings that T-Mac sees increases across the board, targets/catches/yards/TDs.   Just as Coker will also see career highs in all categories, it's not one vs the other, it's shifting offensive strategy given our personnel, which next year will be much better for our passing game (QB issues aside).
    • C'mon now.... First, you can't switch up your argument once someone points out a major flaw in your point. You're saying we shouldn't expect a big increase in targets/yards for T-Mac, but then shift to talking about averages with Chase when I point out the significant leap he took there once you factor in his missing games.  He saw an increase in targets in 5 less games, averages aside, he saw a significant increase in targets in his 2nd season, what he then did with those targets is actually irrelevant in this discussion. Puka seeing no increase is pointless, as he saw such an absurd amount of targets for a rookie, it's near impossible to see an increase. But the real issue in this post is that you think I'm proving your point by showing how Waddle had to share targets with Hill. Tyreek Hill was a 1st team All Pro who was 2nd in the NFL in yards that season. If you think Jaylen Waddle sharing targets with a 1st team All Pro and a future HOFer is even remotely in the same category as T-Mac needing to share targets with Coker... then you are certifiably insane, lol. If anything, you could make the argument that Coker is to Waddle as T-Mac is to Hill in that discussion (which would then lead to a serious increase in targets/yards for T-Mac).  But even that is insane, as neither T-Mac or Coker will be as good as Hill and Waddle respectively that season.  I love both of their potential, but c'mon now, T-Mac isn't getting 119 catches for 1,700 yards and Coker isn't getting 117 for 1,350 next season.
