Jarrett still sticking with Panthers

It looks as though WR Dwayne Jarrett is likely to stick with the Carolina Panthers unless he completely bombs out in training camp.

That didn’t look like the case at the end of the 2009 season when Jarrett was declared inactive by coach John Fox before injuries forced him back on to the field.

Really there’s no reason to release Jarrett at this point and here’s why: The Panthers have to pay him about $530,000 in guaranteed money this year anyway as part of second portion of original rookie signing bonus. Normally with most rookie contracts that money is paid it out well before the fourth season, but Jarrett has played so little (and been so unproductive) that he hasn’t triggered that second signing bonus under the terms of his contract. Until now.

The Panthers will have to pay him that bonus this year regardless of whether he makes the team or not since it is his final season.

And, since his base salary this year is $550,000 — the league minimum for a player entering his fourth NFL season — it’s almost like being in a big hand of poker. You might as well go “all in” and hope you get lucky even though odds are you won’t win.

Hey, maybe his performance in the 2009 season finale was a sign of things to come. Like I said, he’s at least worth bringing to training camp.

Then again, maybe the Panthers will just add him to the ongoing fire sale.

It's so hard to tell if Jarrett is just retarded or if the coaching staff is just completely incapable of developing a receiver. Smith has been the only good (or even DECENT) one since Moose. What gives?

Jarrett won't be nothing more then a possession receiver, which, if that is what the Panthers want as a #2 then this is his time to shine. I think people will see vast improvements in him.

Jarrett has produced VERY WELL when given the chance.

I think with Moore we will see that USC standout everyone was happy to draft.

My biggest concern with Jarrett isn't his ability to run routes or catch passes. It's his ability to block in the running game. Moose was/is one of the best blocking WR in the NFL and was a part of the success of the running game. With the way this team is build, that is actually more important than catching the ball.

I'm still iffy on Jarrett.

Smith indicted him for not being a hard worker, and it's been said that he's thrown more parties than he's caught passes. He's definitely got talent, but talent without work ethic isn't enough at the pro level. Plus he killed us with the illegal shift penalties against the Pats.

With that said, he certainly looked like a keeper in the last game when Moore had hit his stride. Delhomme rarely threw to guys he didn't trust, and I think it's safe to say Jarrett wasn't on that list (Smith, Moose, King, Rosario, Williams, maybe Barnidge, but no Jarrett).

Moore has had no such issues, so who knows whether he and Jarrett might have chemistry?

I think the BIGGEST problem with Jarrett has been maturity (like Fiz). He can be great, and I think now with age he is starting to realize what it will take to reach his full potential in the NFL.

If he bombs this season he will be done, but I think fans will be screaming his name more than they think!
