Jake still wants to start...

As free agent quarterback Jake Delhomme takes his tour of teams interested in offering him a contract, he's hoping to find one team that will offer him a starting job.

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports, citing a league source, that Delhomme, who spent Thursday with the Browns, would love to sign with Cleveland if he has a chance to start. But if he's going to be standing on the sidelines holding a clipboard, the Louisiana native would probably rather be in New Orleans, where he could be near his family and possibly hold a clipboard during the Super Bowl.

It's not clear what the Browns told Delhomme about his chances of starting in Cleveland, but it's certainly conceivable that he could beat out Seneca Wallace and/or Brady Quinn in a training camp competition. It's inconceivable that he could start in New Orleans as long as Drew Brees is healthy.

Delhomme is heading to New Orleans today, and there are indications that the Saints will offer him a contract. But the Saints can't offer him an opportunity to start. The Browns can.

I would like to own the Panthers so I could re-sign Brad Hoover, draft a freaking WR and sign someone better than Wallace Wright... Sorry Jake but you're not an NFL starting QB these days, take the backup role.

Jake's such a try-hard in practice/camp that I could easily see him winning out on a team like the Browns with a perpetually shaky QB situation. Then he'll be treated to the Steelers and Ravens defenses a combined four times.

Soooooo, if this was his mentality, there was a strong chance of pouting on the sidelines for us, if we kept him. Personally I still see this as an indicator into why the FO let him go, he probably thought he was still the number one guy here.

I don't think Jake's competitive spirit is so easily burried. He won't take a backup role while he can still stand. I appreciate that.

Accepting a backup role would be admitting defeat. And with his fourth quarter numbers and history of late-game comebacks, I don't think a player like Jake ever admits defeat. And Jase is right. Cleveland needs a leader right now.

I hope Jake finds a place with the Seahawks or Rams. I don't think the Cards will touch him unfortunately haha. He certainly deserves better than the Browns though.

Whether Jake is starting material or not, you can't blame him for wanting to start. In fact, we had the experience of signing a QB who actually wanted to hold the clipboard (Carr) and look how that turned out.
