Special Team Signings

Signing players exclusively to play Special Teams is kinda stupid. You waste roster spots this way. The idea is to find players who can play other positions as well as special teams. Now if Wright cant catch a football, hes not needed, if Hudson cant cover a wr, hes not needed. Point is, carolina had good special teams when they had players that could play multiple positions.

Ever heard of Karl Hankton. Best ST player we ever had. Was listed as a WR, but could not catch a cold.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/team/_/stat/returning/sort/yardsPerKickReturn/position/defense

2009 kickoff coverage ranking: 30 - Allowing an average of 24.8 yards per kickoff return

2009 punt coverage ranking: 29 - Allowing an average of 11.0 yards per kickoff return

Yeah, our special teams is fine. Let's ignore low cost players and risk putting our highly paid starters on ST where they could get injured. ??????????

I'd be fine if they signed a couple more special teams studs. Field position is huge in the NFL, and when our defense starts drives on the damn 40yrd line they're going to struggle.

Special teams accounts for up to 1/4th of each pro football game. And that quarter of the game can make a huge impact on the outcome.

Defenders rely on great kickoff and punt coverage to keep an opponent pinned deep in their own territory. Each yard that the special teams can keep the opponent from getting makes it that much harder for them to score. Why is it important to boom kicks out of the endzone during kick-offs? Because even high power offenses fail more often than not if they have to go 80 or more yards to score. Crank it down to 75 yards to score and their odds of scoring increases greatly. And if they should break one and get past the 50-yard line, they are almost guaranteed of coming away with at least a field goal.

So gunners and overall kick coverage are important. On punts, being able to down the ball within the opponent's 10-yard line starts a clock on when you will most likely score again. If an offense fumbles or throws an INT here, it is almost a guaranteed score. And if they can be held and forced into a three and out, chances are you'll get it inside of the fifty. (See above).

And no one should have to explain how important field goals and extra points are.

Special teams are important and there are some folks who specialize in playing on them. And just remember, who would have known about Steve Smith if he hadn't been our kick returner?

Very few 5th/4th/3rd string linebackers/recivers/ cornerbacks can do anything special in a game, and will get very few playing time within the season. Therefore it's smart to use those backups for somthing they can contribute to in every game i.e special teams

    • Of course, everyone has film. That is probably fresh in their mind though. Our games with them are big examples of why they are in  the CB market so hard.   This goes to why players often change teams but stay in the division.  and if you lost to us, you used to get fired. Now you have to trade your first round pick. Moving up on the world.
    • I honestly can’t believe this team’s turnaround this season. It’s surreal. Figured healthy we’d be fringe playoffs and with another lottery pick could finally turn the corner, but we don’t even need that. This group is ready. We haven’t played remotely well the last 5 games and yet still blew out 5 bad teams by 16+ each game like it was casual practice. We had a few solid teams with Kemba and Big Al but this is easily our best group since the original Hornets moved to NO. Man, what a shift in culture this new ownership group and front office has brought. So damn happy to see it after years of suffering and consistently meaningless games in this stretch of previous seasons.   Only 2.5 games out of the 6 seed, although Miami, Atlanta and Orlando have been playing well too. Gonna be a fun final stretch, hopefully we can get a top 8 seed at the very least. Celtics tomorrow will be a good test. Would be huge to keep the road winning streak up against a very hot top team on the 2nd half of a back to back. We’ve played Boston pretty well the last few years with much of this same group despite sucking so I do feel pretty good about it. Kon is due for a huge game coming off a few cold shooting games (although despite the poor shooting he’s been contributing well with defense, assists and rebounds).
    • It amazes me how underrated Horn has become after he finally was able to stay on the field. Sure last year wasn’t perfect but he was still a huge reason for our rebound defensively and I’d say he’s easily a top 10 corner. You don’t want to see Mike Jackson as our top corner. Any player is available for the right price but I’d be extremely hesitant to move Horn even for a big haul from LA.
