Source says Panthers will seek extension with DeAngelo Williams

If I were to choose between D-Will and J-Stew, I would choose J-Stew. Younger, Kicks ass already and we still haven't even scratched the surface of his abilities. Nuff said.

But I want them both to retire as Panthers.

Just stop it right now because DWill is better. On the other hand, different strokes for different folks I guess. But I do agree with the end of your statement because I do want them both to retire as Panthers.

absolutely.

btw...anyone know where williams and stewart were yesterday evening?

its awesome to have these two guys hanging out like they do. most RBs might be in a bit of a rivalry considering both could be legit #1 RBs on most teams but here these two are good friends on and off the field. chemistry, talent, and long term potential like this you don't break up.

if this report is true, one thing it puts a kink in is those rumors of a trade to san diego.

not trying to dispute any friendship between the 2, but i'm pretty sure that's one of the rare times they've spent together during the offseason. both have been doing quite a bit of traveling on their own.

fishing together may be a result of a way to unwind from the first day of offseason workouts.

We need to keep both guys for a long time. They are already on their way tp becoming one of the top 5 RB tandems of all time. Also because they share the load so well if DeAngelo were to leave lets say when he's around 30-32, we still have a reletively fresh 27-28 year old in stewart. It's not everyday you have a team who knows that if they lose their number 1, Pro Bowl RB, they have someone just as good behind him.

a good idea would be to front load the contract, especially if it's for more than 3 seasons.

rbs typically don't have long career lifespans, and they usually fizzle out by the time they're 29, so if we can give DeAngelo most of his money now, while he's still productive, if he's declining around 2013 we can cut him and there won't be much of a cap penalty if the salary is small. Also this would be beneficial because this year there is no cap and we can give him a solid percentage of what they're trying to sign him for just this year.

as someone has already said, the RB's that are fading out around age 30 are the ones who have been workhorses since they entered the league.

for example, LT has 2880 career rushing attempts and was averaging well over 300 carries a season every year until 2008.(this isn't including him as a receiver, he also has over 500 receptions.) it's obvious why his production has gone down. I'd say LT started losing a step at around 2200 carries.

DeAngelo has 754 carries, and hasn't had a season over 273 carries. He's hardly got any mileage, LT had that much by his 3rd season :P

That's actually an amazing comparison (in a good way).

Seeing as I can't remember Stewart ever missing playing time because of an injury (other than the second half of the Saint's game), I'd have to disagree.

He's always missing practice because of an injury, hence me saying he has a propensity to be hurt.

Ok so how do you then explain the decline of...

Larry Johnson

Stephen Davis

Shaun Alexander

Ahman Green

Deuce McAllister

Priest Holmes

it's not only the aging factor, but RBs in general are a very risky investment, and much of it is due to the pounding they take running between the tackles. then they get hurt, and in a lot of cases, they never fully recover.

So kenny, what happens if we extend DeAngelo's contract for 5 years and 40 million (just using a random figure), and it's prorated about evenly throughout the deal, and one or two years into the deal he tears his acl, or breaks an ankle, or a foot, or a knee, or a tibia, or separates a shoulder, and when he has surgery or whatever, the next season he comes back, he can't hit the hole up the middle as hard, and he can't cut as sharply, and he can't break tackles as well as he did before?

what if we ask this for every single player, including ones that haven't had a heavy workload and have only been injured twice, both flukes?
