Pick 5 potential Panthers...

I know this is should probably go in the NFL draft section but more people are on this one. I have been doing this each year for the past few years and its really fun to see where guys fall on draft day. I usually do them for every round but we will start with the 2nd. Pick the top 5 guys that you would want at our pick. Be realistic and try to think of people who would actually be there. Rank them 1-5, kinda like a draft board, and they don't have to be 5 different positions. Here are mine:

1) WR Demaryius Thomas: I'm not sure that he will be here but if he is still available I think we have to snag him. I have my doubts about this kid but at the very least he will be a bigger faster version of Moose because of his blocking ability. The sky is the limit for this guy, huge boom or bust potential.

2) DE Carlos Dunlap: Again, not sure he will be there but if he falls and Thomas is gone I think we should ****** him up. We all know that Brayton and Johnson can fill in at DT on passing downs so I'm not as worried about the DT as most people. Dunlap may be lazy but so was Peppers, he also has god given talent that can't be duplicated. Could really ease the blow that Peppers' loss will have on the sack total.

3) WR Damian Williams: I'm not necessarily going to stick my nose up to this guy just because of the school he went to but I've got to be honest...it worries me. I really think this kid could help and at the very least be an effective slot receiver. His route running is superb, he is more quick than fast, and he has great hands...we just have to keep telling ourselves that he isn't Keary Colbert.

4) Lamar Houston: Kind of a safety pick here and even though I'm not one of those guys who feels like DT is a huge need I just like this kid's athleticism and ability to penetrate. I'm not sure where he would be on the depth chart but rest assured he should develop into a decent starter at some point.

5) Andre Roberts: A huge reach right here and I know a ton of people would rather have Marty Gilyard here but I absolutely love Roberts. Ideally we could get him in the third but I don't think he will last that long. I also think we could grab Roberts here and then AJ Edds or Dekoda Watson in the third. That would be fantastic.

I really like Roberts more than Williams but I think Roberts could drop to us in the third but its risky. Last year when I did this I had Duke Robinson listed 4th in the second round and he lasted all the way until the 5th so maybe one of these guys will drop badly like he did. I also had Irvin on there in the 4th and he went a round early...you never know.

Everyone will know how i am gonna go.

1. Mardy Gilyard - 1483 yrds in the return game with 3 td's. Avg of 30 yrds an attempt. Long return of 99. Good body control and shiftiness makes him very good in seam and crossing routes.

2. Carlton Mitchell - Size and speed combination. Long strides make him dangerous after the catch. A red zone threat also at 6'4'' 215lbs. Has the ability to sustain blocks.

3. Andre Roberts - Level of comp is an issue but he quieted that during Senior Bowl. Local kid from nearby Columbia, SC. A top performer in several drills at combine. So the fact he has done it on the field and shown athleticism sells me.

4. Jacoby Ford - Burner. Is not just a track star. Has the body of a football player. Underrated route runner. With the NFL's rules regarding contact by CB's he will be even more dangerous of the line. Experienced return specialist.

5. Taylor Price - Another burner. Could be an excellent Slot guy. Solid hands and sharp route running. Small school guy that the Panther's have shown interest in.

In the 3rd i like the following and no they are not all WR/KR this time.

1. Austen Lane - I see this guy as a Meeks DE. For a small school kid surprisingly refined pass rush moves. Has a blend of burst and size that a coach like Meeks would enjoy coaching.

2. Akwasi Owusu-Ansah - Born on Sunday has return skills, size, speed and good hands. A zone or press corner that is aggressive in run support. Is a versatile weapon.

3. Dekoda Watson - Good speed and agility. Attacks line in run support. Very athletic and could be very useful in special team.

4. Marcus Easley - This would be a potential over production pick. Has size and speed combination and is a willing and capable blocker. Very raw but as the inflated draft stock of Bay Bay Thomas proves potential will get you drafted.

5. Antonio Brown - Accumulated 3,434 yards and 5 TD's returning kicks. Smallish but has speed and is willing to make contact when run blocking. His elusiveness and quickness could make him a dangerous slot and return guy.

Honestly I wouldn't mind taking 2 WR's in this draft just so we have a better chance of someone panning out. WR has been an issue for a long time and we have to settle it once and for all(ha that sounds lame). Plus if Matt Moore can turn Jarrett into something then we should be set at WR for a long time. I'd definitely hope we land Price and seems like the team wants him.

1- Arrelious "Rejus" Benn, WR, Illinois

2- Tyson Alualu, DT, Southern Cal

3- Marcus Easley, WR, Connecticut

4- Dekoda Watson, OLB, FSU

5- Crezdon Butler, CB, Clemson

He's a 3-4 Defensive end from California....

People forget that Jarrett is actually younger then some of the receivers in the draft but has 3 years of experience in the league and our system. Now that he has his chance (for now) I think he will impress.

My 5:

B. Graham DE

D. Thomas WR

M. Gilyard WR

C. Wooton DE

J. Ford WR

    • They can get film of all the games? Every team? Wow! Who knew… Our games with them are big examples of why they are in  the CB market so hard.   It is the study they do getting ready for the games.  Preparing to play against is a little different than just analyzing film in scout mode. Deeper dive. Then you are analyzing post game too.  This goes to why players often change teams but stay in the division. The opponents know each other on a higher level.  Plus if you lost to us, you used to get fired. Now you have to trade your first round pick. Moving up on the world.
    • I honestly can’t believe this team’s turnaround this season. It’s surreal. Figured healthy we’d be fringe playoffs and with another lottery pick could finally turn the corner, but we don’t even need that. This group is ready. We haven’t played remotely well the last 5 games and yet still blew out 5 bad teams by 16+ each game like it was casual practice. We had a few solid teams with Kemba and Big Al but this is easily our best group since the original Hornets moved to NO. Man, what a shift in culture this new ownership group and front office has brought. So damn happy to see it after years of suffering and consistently meaningless games in this stretch of previous seasons.   Only 2.5 games out of the 6 seed, although Miami, Atlanta and Orlando have been playing well too. Gonna be a fun final stretch, hopefully we can get a top 8 seed at the very least. Celtics tomorrow will be a good test. Would be huge to keep the road winning streak up against a very hot top team on the 2nd half of a back to back. We’ve played Boston pretty well the last few years with much of this same group despite sucking so I do feel pretty good about it. Kon is due for a huge game coming off a few cold shooting games (although despite the poor shooting he’s been contributing well with defense, assists and rebounds).
    • It amazes me how underrated Horn has become after he finally was able to stay on the field. Sure last year wasn’t perfect but he was still a huge reason for our rebound defensively and I’d say he’s easily a top 10 corner. You don’t want to see Mike Jackson as our top corner. Any player is available for the right price but I’d be extremely hesitant to move Horn even for a big haul from LA.
