What is a "con game", the Bible, belief in a creator and an afterlife, or both?

I’m speaking of the Bible specifically as indicated and religion based on a book everyone knows as historical fact was written and edited in ways that make it incompatible with an idea that it’s the infallible “Word of God”.

There is no way I can tell you if there is some kind of spiritual thing like an afterlife or something intelligent that made us. But I’ve come to terms with that, uncomfortable as it is. I get how people need to have that but it’s all mass delusion. I am glad you found this thing to believe in, but there’s as much need to put it out here as I do my belief in the Panthers going to the Superbowl next year, for which I would deserve severe mocking for.

Well, this is a discussion community and management has invited its guests to engage in discussions on a wide variety of topics in this particular sub-forum.  It's my understanding that guests here aren't required to read, let alone respond (as you did), to posts that are of no interest to them.  There are many threads on many discussion forums that don't interest me.  I don't enter into those discussions to announce that I am disinterested in the subject matter.  I try to follow the mantra of "live and let live" but it appears that you don't share that philosophy.

Live and Let Live is a great philosophy. Too bad organized religion has been used as a tool for war and propaganda since the beginning of time. It’s also incompatible with Christianity as warped by European civilization for its own purposes.

American Christianity as a whole has morphed from disparate groups fleeing persecution in Europe, to tax free indoctrinations of the idea that allowing whatever interpretation of Christianity in vogue the politicians latch onto should be a government obligation to enforce. The fact that so many of them are fine with the most non Christian person imaginable leading them politically has just reinforced this idea. Read about Bob Jones University, the Supreme Court, and how it led to where we are today. Hint: “Religion forbid mixing races where’s our freedom?” Does Christianity forbid interracial dating? Yes, No, or just something we can ignore? All three most likely!

Mister Rogers Neighborhood should be the new Bible. Fred Rogers was even a minister! The Bible could pared down to one page, not spend any page real estate discussing fabric mixing, and we would all be happy together. And we would not need the promise of a heaven that doesn’t exist to make it that way.

I believe that the vast majority of people only believe what they believe because of the shared beliefs of the culture they were born into and grew up in.

If you live in America and you’re Christian, that’s the main basis for your faith more than any personally held belief.

If you were born in and grew up in Egypt for example you’re far more likely to be Muslim for the same reasons.

and if you were born in Japan you would likely believe in Shintoism or Buddhism for yet again the same reasons already stated.

I was raised Christian, but i was far too large of a skeptic on everything, religion included and fell away from it as a result. Truthfully believing in any religion in my opinion requires a certain level of willful ignorance(faith). You question too much, and you’ll lose your faith.

take it for what you will. I could probably write a small book on this, but I’m sure most wouldn’t appreciate the views I hold on religion. of the worlds major religions, I like Buddhism the most as I’ve read more into it.  But as of right now, I consider myself an Agnostic borderline Atheist.

I'm in this boat. I grew up Christian and in church because of my parents, but chose to walk away as a young adult for my own reasons.

I am married now and my wife is an avid Christian. She wants me to pursue it, but having done for my entire childhood, I'd rather do it on my own time and pace. There's a lot I do not agree with and question.

My only thing that gets me these days, is how vocal Christians feel they need to be and resort to pestering or trying to scare people into faith. I think if God is truly good, then be an example of it in your daily life and people will see that fruit and then want it for themselves. Stop shoving it down people's throat and stop being a weirdo about it.

I was raised Greek Orthodox and according to church doctrine I punched my ticket to heaven when I was baptized as an infant, so it's all good G.

I was confirmed in the Catholic church at 17 so it was pretty easy to convert to a Godless heathen after that.

Sounds like kind of a pick and choose narrative to keep things simple but the jist is certainly correct.

I believe there are eight parts that go into a lot of different aspects. I watched it a long time ago. This one just keeps it simple. A couple of things talked about are false. I am perfectly willing to see/accept that.

However, as you said the gist of it and hundreds of other things/examples are very correct. And that’s quite an overbearing amount of information to not plainly see the pattern.
