Panthers Jonathan Stewart's goal: To be pain-free

(By Charles Chandler, [email protected]) The two-inch surgical scar just above Jonathan Stewart's left heel looks tiny considering the pain and risk he endured last season.p/That small area of his 5-foot-10, 235-pound body was a constant nuisance and potential season-ending threat because of a bone spur pressing into his Achilles tendon near its insertion to his heel. He said he also had bursitis and tendonitis.

Stewart was a force with the injuries bugging him throughout the season. Now hopefully his surgery went according to plan and he can be back by training camp. Just imagine his raw power without the achilles/toe bothering him, he can drag Atlanta defenders for 12 yards instead of just 6

Right after we drafted Stewart, I ended up talking with a real interesting customer who played with the Ducks in the 60's and still followed the team religiously. I asked him what he thought about Stewart and he said he's certainly a great back, but he's rarely seen a guy more willing to play through pain.

Funny how people here still complain about him being "injury prone" when I can't think of a game he's missed due to injury. Dude's tough as nails.

The concerns about his injuries are valid. Nobody is denying his toughness.

He hasn't been 100% for a long time. We could possibly have the greatest tandem of all time, I'm anxious to see if we can put together a rushing performance for the record books. Superbowls are much more important, but I'd love to see them play up to their potential.

I love Stew's heart, and trust our trainers for the most part...but the Observer article had this eerie air of them putting him out there (ultimately up to him) even though he wasn't 100%. The whole "ways around it" line rubs me the wrong way. It's like they were rolling the dice. If anything had gone wrong and we found out what we now know, we'd blame them. Luckily he held out. But I don't like them taking risks with our stars. If dude should probably get it corrected...get it corrected. If you want to push the envelope, do it with a backup.
