Matt Moore describes his draft day

"I didn’t pay too much attention on the first day of the draft in 2007. I was interested in the first couple of picks, but that was it. That Sunday though I thought there might be an outside chance that someone would pick me up.

It’s so funny, because when it started out I didn’t want to make a big deal out of it, I didn’t want to have people over in case I didn’t get drafted. So it was just my family hanging out at my parent’s house in Valencia, California, at the beginning, but then all my buddies started to come over and it became a big barbeque, which is what I didn’t want to happen. But it ended up being a really good time and I was happy that everyone was there.

As the day went on, I got calls from a couple teams who said they might take me in the later rounds. The Jets called, Detroit called late. It was kind of a long day. Your emotions ride high when you get a call from a team saying they might pick you and telling you what they’re thinking.

I didn’t get drafted and immediately after the draft there were a lot of teams on the line. Carolina was one of them, Dallas, Detroit, and Kansas City. There were a lot of highs and lows, a lot of emotions. It ended up being a blessing that everyone came over. We played bocce ball and took my mind off the draft for a while because at the end I was paying a lot more attention.

There was really no time to be disappointed afterward, though. Probably no more than five minutes after my agents were on the phone and everything went into motion. I was happy that a bunch of teams wanted me but I found it hard to turn down the possibility of being a Dallas Cowboy. They gave me $15,000 and I couldn’t have asked for a better situation.

I learned a lot in Dallas. Tony Romo was the starter and Brad Johnson the No. 2. I was there with Richard Bartel and he and I were battling for the No. 3 spot. They ended up carrying only two quarterbacks. They wanted to put me on the practice squad but I was claimed by Carolina during the 24-hour period and I was happy about that."

I was at his 1st Game against Seattle in 07. I could not help thinking of how poised he was. I think the transition from Jake to Matt will be painless.

Anytime you switch QBs there is always the chance that the new QB won't work and then you go into panic mode cause you don't really have anything viable.

Matt Moore will not be like that.

I told him before his first play in the regular season that I had turned to my friend and said it would be a run because they weren't going to have a rookie try a big pass his first time out. Then we both watched as he lobbed it 43 yards to Keary Colbert. He laughed at that

Last year, Jake wasn't signing for fans as he had before, but Moore was. I remember thinking "a sign of things to come?"

for the past 2 years, I have been telling my friends that the panthers need to start matt moore, and boom now he's the starter.

Called it.

I think most of us wanted to see him starting by the Bye week last season. Probably would have saved our season. He would have been hitting his stride by mid-season (instead of week 14) and we would have most likely been a contender.

    • Possible, he is physical and a forchecker but not a needle mover, but i wouldnt mind it, although I think we have enough 4th line grinders right now between Carrier Robinson and Janakowski  down there, i actually really love our 4th line.            We need scoring in the top 6, and a RHD at this point its definitely coming via trade.            Rasmus Andersson I hear may be on the market, it feels like every couple of seasons someone links us to Erik Karlsson.       As far as centers go,  Marco Rossi (even though we have a ton of smurf already)     Jordan Kyrou is an intriguing option if he is available.           At this point i think Rod should just move Jarvis to his natural center position to give us a 1B center...   yes hes also a smurf but he plays way bigger than he is stylistically.

    • The problem with these summary stats and rankings is that they flatten out progression and assume an even performance throughout the year. His first 3 or 4 games of the season don't really tell you anything about his current level of capacity but more about where he started and what his floor was last year. Given his last several games were against playoff teams, that gives you an idea of his current ability coming into the season. But it will serve more as a floor than a ceiling given the upgrade in talent on offense. And a better defense should give us more stops which results in shorter fields and more opportunities. And going into his third year there is no reason to suspect he will regress. His success wasn't  based on being superhuman but being smart and taking what was the defense was giving him. Distributing to the other guys not trying to do it on his own. He was great at the end when pressured and consistently moved the ball. That makes him a great game manager which is what we need. Something that is easier to do and relies on everyone else rather than having to be a top physical specimen or do it on his own. No one can predict the future but to say we haven't improved much is crazy given just having the Browns anchoring the defensive line will shut down the run and make sure QBs won't be stepping up in the pocket.  Assuming Evero got the message to can the prevent defense and bend until you break philosophy.
