Charlie Martin

So I know we have a slew of new wide receivers, but I was if anyone has heard anything on like Charlie Martin. Is there any chance he makes the team, or is he off the roster with these other draft picks in here.

I see us carrying 6 wide receivers on the roster this year. Call me crazy all you want, but Fox wants a good handful of weapons for his new offensive play calling. If this is his last year coaching in Carolina, why not put all the marbles in the bag? And some of these guys will also be expected to produce on Special Teams as well.

1. Steve Smith (that's a given)

2. Dwayne Jarrett (I haven't given up on him, and neither have the coaches)

3. Armantti Edwards (our DeSean Jackson + special teams play)

4. Brandon Lafell (drafted in the 2nd round, he has to make the team)

5. Kenneth Moore (my belief is that he was 4th on the roster last season, no reason he won't make the team this year)

6. And this one is obviously up in the air, but my money is on David Gettis.

So with all that being said, Charlie Martin doesn't make the team in my opinion. I think there's a lot of talent in that position now, and it'll be really really tough for him to stand out unless he has a spectacular preseason.

I had some hope for Dexter Jackson, but I doubt he makes the team.

We have so many young guys at the position that seem to have the potential. I just hope even one or two can step up big for us next year.

We have a lot of talented young guys. It should be good competition.

SIX? Wow I don't see it. The Panthers have rarely carried more than 4 WR at a time. I could possibly see us going to 5 but no way 6.

According to the Observer we are practicing quite a lot in 4 WR sets. These first 3 days have been nothing but passing game, and that means we will probably carry more than 4 WR's.

Normally I would agree, but we've got to find some talented receivers. The front office might be inclined to keep a few more on the roster in hopes we can get a couple legitimate starters out of the group.

But you're right that historically we don't carry more than four receivers and, if we do, many of the receivers are also expected to contribute on special teams.

If we do the same this year, players like Wallace Wright might earn one of the spots. Maybe Goodson will play some slot receiver this year as well.

Good point, don't count out Goodson playing slot. Armanti will join up and reserve that WR/KR spot freeing up another spot for a WR.

I certainly hope so, but I wouldn't annoint Armanti as a returner just yet, especially given his inexperience with the position.

Think about how often we've brought guys on and just assumed they'd work out as a returner. How many guys gave it a shot last year? Goodson, Sutton, Munnerlyn, etc.

Munnerlyn was really good in my opinion. He struggled a little, but he also broke off some long ones. One which I recall was called back due to a flag.

    • I love this draft because they picked the right OL.  It is possible that we have 2 rookies starting on the OL.  I would take Utah's Lomu as well, but for those who think you find the OL in free agency and not the draft, here is all I have to say:  We cannot give $110m to the 5 starting OL.  We need an infusion of youth on the OL as well.  If Ickey returns and can play, I imagine that he takes over for Hunt at RG--in 2027 or so.  Currently, our 2 guards and right tackle make up over 20% of the total cap.  We have to add 2 starters, but if Cade Mays was too pricey at around (anticipated) $8m, then we plan to draft a C, it seems. I think we draft an OT and C now because we will need a G or 2 and a RT soon.  While they were good in 2026, they were not elite.  For that kind of $$, we need elite.  Is starting a rookie LT and C ideal?  Nope.  But if we can get better than Nijman and Mays, we should be OK. I think we will pick up an ILB in free agency and add an ILB.  Who we draft (Mike or Will) will depend on who we sign.  Rodriguez is a favorite of mine, but if Golday is there, Morgan is going to take him.  Morgan will love him. I do not think we need to overpopulate the edge position right now because we have 1 edge returning from injury (Jones II), one rookie from last year ready to step up and could be really good (Scourton), and another who could be ready to step into the situational pass rusher role (Princely).  2 hold the edge very well and if we had a situational pass rusher to join Princely, we could be much better. I think rookies at Edge tend to jump considerably from their rookie seasons to years 2 and 3.  (Charles Johnson, Mike Rucker, and Greg Hardy were that way-and all became very good in time. Safety seems omitted, but we shall see.  That could be another free agent acquisition.
    • Id like Evans from Duke in the draft as a shooter for the second unit. And probably a more athletic big to replace all, he's good but doesn't really fit the style. White, Evans, green, Williams and center tbd is a pretty good second unit
