NFL preview mags are out....

Recommended Posts

The NFL preview mags are out, I bought 2 already Athlon and Pro-Football Weekly. Pro-Football weekly is the only one that is worth a hoot.

They're big wastes of money but I don't care, I'm probably going to buy all of them. I'm a sucker, especially in the middle of the offseason.

I'll give a recap of both if anybody is interested.

Here is a recap for Athlon, I'm not sure if it's against the rules or not I'm sure the Mods will let me know.

Jonathan Stewart was the first and last guy to rush for 200 yards against the Giants at their house.

They have us 3rd in the division on the big page for the nfc, the footnote says "camp battle to determine who throws this year's picks".

How turnover prone is Matt Moore again? 1 INT in 5 starts.

How many picks did Clausen throw in 09? 4.

Bullshit. If they're going to take a shot they try not to make a total ass of themselves.

When they rank QB's on winning percentage Matt Moore is #1 because of his 6-2 record as a starter lol.

Team Recap:

Coaches B- - The usual stuff.

QB C - They say Moore has a strong arm and can really hum a deep ball.

RB/FB - A - They seem to like Fiametta.

WR/TE C+ - The like Lafell for #2 but acknowledge that behind Smith it's a total crapshoot. They think we have a very balanced TE corp.

OL - B - with the way they talk about them you think it would be an A.

DL - C- - Peppers is hard to replace. They like Johnson over Brown. They think Tyler and Leonard are good options as long as they don't get injured.

LB - A- - Beason is the man, Davis would have made the ProBowl if not for the ACL. Connor/Williams will fight for SLB. Norwood will be a specialist.

DB - B- - Gamble and Marshall are good but not great. Godfrey should be the SS, improving his poor coverage skills. Martin is versatile and should be a good player.

ST - C - Kasay automatic inside 40yds, Baker consistent, Todd Carter KOS, Sutton promising KR, Munnerlynn needs to be replaced most likely by Edwards.

Scout's and opposing coaches opinions:

Moore unproven. If we liked him so much we wouldn't have drafted Clausen/Pike. Clausen NFL ready because of Weis. Everette Brown is nearly a bust. We won't be able to replace Peppers.

Draft recap:

We obviously wanted to shore up the 27th ranked passing game. Lafell has the door wide open for him. Edwards could be a dynamic role player. Norwood will be a good specialist.

FA recap:

Ed Johnson the only person with a shot to start, FA was largely to strengthen ST.

Final Analysis:

Fox won't be bothered by lack of new deal, we need 3-4 guys to step up or we won't make the playoffs.

Well the only thing I learned was that cool fact about Stewart and the Giants.

Pro Football Weekly

We'll be 3rd in the Division with a 6-10 record.

In power rankings we're 22nd with 40-1 odds on SB. The footnote says the run game will keep us competitive but losing Peppers hurts.

In the "rookie watch" they see Clausen as a darkhorse, I guess it's the fact that he couldn't have gone to a better team, but he also is unlikely to start.

In this section called "32 questions", the guy asks "What are the odds that Jerry Richardson would fire his two sons but keep John Fox after an 8-8 season?

Player Rankings

bluechip(franchise) is 4 to 5

redchip(impact) is 3-3.99

purple(can get the job done/has potential) - is 2.4 to 2.99

In their rankings of the top 50 guys in the NFL Smitty is 37th and Beason is 45th. Beason is behind Ryans who is 44th and Willis who is 18th. Beason and Smitty both have blue chip grades.

Matt Moore is the 24th ranked QB with an upside annotation. He has a 2.9 which means he can get the job done but he's unproven. Delhome is the 26th ranked QB in decline.

Double Trouble is ranked 8th and 9th with Williams in the front. Stewart has the huge upside annotation. They both have an impact 3.9 which means they're impact but have small imperfections. They are easily the best tandem in the rankings, it's not even close. Turner is ranked ahead of them:eek:

Smitty is ranked 5th with a franchise 4.0 and they says he has impressive production when you look at his supporting cast.

None of our TE's register anywhere but they only have 19 slots.

Kalil is ranked 2nd in the league with an impact 3.85 behind Mangold(4.00) which makes him best in the NFC.

Wharton is the 12th ranked guard in the league with an impact 3.3, they say he's very good in pass protection but he's too inconsistent.

Gross is the 7th in the league with an impact 3.65 and an upside annotation. They say he would be ranked higher if he played on the right side. Otah is the 10th ranked with an impact 3.5 and an upside annotation. They say he needs better technique and he should be pro bowler this year. These rankings mean we have the best OT tandem in the league followed closely by the Titans and Ravens.

None of our DE's even register in the rankings but Charles Johnson is listed as a top veteran prospect. That pretty much means he will have a breakout year when compared to his previous years.

None of our DT's register in the rankings period. Nothing.

Beason is the 3rd best MLB in the leauge with a franchise 4.0. They say he plays "out of control" sometimes. I haven't really seen that.

Thomas Davis is rated 18th with an impact 3.4 and an injury annotation. However, he is the 4th or 5th ranked 4-3 OLB. I can't remember what the texans play, if they are 3-4 then he's the 4th ranked 4-3 OLB.

Richard Marshall is ranked 17th with an impact 3.4 and Chris gamble is ranked 21st with an impact 3.3. Thats a little surprising that they would have marshall ahead of gamble. I'll have to think that one over. I figured I would see Munnerlynn as a top veteran prospect but I guess he's too young.

None of our Safteys are ranked but Godfrey is considered a top veteran prospect.

Team Position Rankings

QB - C- - They have a good informed opinion of Moore. Much better than Athlon's. They think Clausen will most likely be the best QB in his class.

RB/FB - A- - Double Trouble is awesome. Goodson needs to develop ball security to get on the field. No mention of Sutton. Fiametta will have a hard time replacing Hoover.

WR/TE - C- - Smitty is great. Crapshoot after that. Rosario and Barnidge will have bigger roles in '10.

OL - A - Good depth and talent. They pretty much say every starter is a better run blocker than pass protector.

DL - C- - Tough job to replace Peppers, Brown is the favorite. The DT's should be able to step up and play well. Norwood and Hardy should make the team as pass rushers. They said Charles Johnson is undersized for DE:confused:

LB - B - Beason is a beast. Williams/Anderson/Connor will compete for SLB.

DB - B - They think Gamble is better at coverage but Marshall is the better tackler and he's faster. The talk about Munnerlynn as if he came of the practice sqaud. They say he "could" play nickel and they don't mention how well he did for a 7th rounder. Godfrey has good measurables but he has yet to play at a high level. Martin will be good in coverage but it is uncertain that he can tackle well.

ST - C- - ST sucked so they fired Danny Crossman and hired Jeff Rodgers. They think Goodson and Munnerlynn will be the returners again. They don't mention sutton, edwards, witherspoon, gettis, or jackson. They don't know if Carter can replace Lloyd.

Summary

John Fox is very good at rebounding after disappointing seasons but the young team may not be able to gel in time to make the playoffs. However, they very well could if things go right.

He had a very disappointing season and he needs a lot of work. He didn't show anything to change their initial opinions on him.

how? he barely played.....

he was in a rotation and splitting time with brayton and johnson, how is that dissapointing?
