um no he wasn't he was a FA he was expected to produce

wait am i doing this right

Um no, he was a FA coming off a shoulder injury and nobody knew what to expect.

But I will conceed that a 2nd round pick can be a "steal" if they turn out to be an elite player, especially if the pick is a QB since that's the most important position on the field. If Clausen turns out to be the next Drew Brees, then he was a steal at 48.

Clausen will remain the third string quarterback until he signs a deal with us. This is going to be a test of his character, something the media knocked him on before the draft. Until he proves that the team comes first, there's no reason to even let him sniff reps with the first or second team.

He's a draft pick that every other team passed on, some twice, before we got to him. He has no pro experience and has to disprove the knock on him. Third string is about right, at the moment.

If he steps up, signs a reasonable deal with the team, his pedigree might land him the second string position before training camp ends. If he plays the whiny, me-first, prima donna that some folks expect and holds out for more money, he might find himself on the practice squad.

Clayton is a moron.

EVERYONE and there mama knows what we do in Carolina. We run, run, and throw to Steve. Moore was basically the same QB in 07 as 09. All you have to do in the offense is not be horrific. We aren't a passing offense and you can study Moore all day long. We all know the plays Fox and company like to run and can predict what and when stuff is coming. All Carolina needs is a QB who hands it off, doesn't fumble or make dumb throws.

hell yeah bro. Imagine if we had a awesome QB. (Clausen)

Honestly where you are going into camp won't tell the tale once the season starts. When Delhomme was signed he started off behind Weinke and Peete. But when Peete floundered he was the once brought in. Clausen has just as much chance to come in if Moore struggles than Cantwell. It depends on who Fox thinks is more game ready. The whole paying his dues thing is made up in Yasinskas' mind. Right now Cantwell is the better option. That could change after 4 preseason games and training camp.

Yeah he never starts a rookie like he did with Godfrey, and Beason, and Otah and the rest.......................

Oh wait....................

Nevermind.......

DeAngelo Williams.

Waiting until what week before yanking Jake and putting in Moore.

Otah...he had no choice.

Same w/ Godfrey and Beason.

Fox finally got the message.

Wiliams wasn't ready to start but he did play from the very first game.

Otah and Beason were ready to start and got the chance. Godfrey didn't have to start but Fox thought he was the best option at that point.

And the whole comment about Moore is out in left field. Moore was a third year player not a rookie in 2009. In 2007 when he was a rookie he didn't even get here until training camp and the preseason were over so he wasn't even familiar with the offense.

The bottom line is that Fox prefers veterans because they are more experienced and make less mistakes the same as almost any coach in the NFL. The whole notion that he wont play a rookie or makes them pay their dues just because they are a rookie is not borne out by facts.

Try again....................

If you're going to try to argue against Yas on the fact that Fox holds rookies back a lot...have at it. In the past 2-3 seasons...Fox has improved. Too many scenarios where the "best chance to win" was against nearly all fan opinions.

The point is that Fox puts in who he thinks is the best guy at the position. He has shown that he will start a rookie if he thinks he is ready. Yas made a point that Fox makes all rookies pay their dues and he was wrong. So are you when you agreed with him. Just let it go and move on. As for fan opinions, thank goodness that neither Fox or Hurney give a crap about what fans think. I can't imagine how crappy the team would be if the FO even adopted a tenth of the stupid ideas put forward by fans here or elsewhere.

    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
