Who would you like to have instead????

Look, there are a lot of us asking for some heads to roll, and the way tonight went, Its understandable.... Im not saying right or wrong here, I just want to know Who would you fire, and more importantly, who would you like their replacement to be?

I've got a separate thread on who I'd let go, but haven't yet talked about replacements. I suppose I'll do that here.

Departure: Jake Delhomme

Replacement: Josh McCown

Moore likely still isn't ready to be a full time starter. McCown has been a starter and besides being a passer is a legitimate run threat. With the run game already clicking, the possibilities there are at least worth a look.

Departure: Mike Trgovac

Replacement: several candidates

In house, you could take a look at Tim Lewis. Coming from outside, I'm a longtime fan of Titans LB coach and former Cards head coach Dave McGinniss. Beyond that, two or three other decent DCs were let go this offseason, one of whom could likely restart a career in Charlotte.

Departure: Ken Lucas

Replacement: likely Richard Marshall

I could see the team choosing to keep Marshall as the nickel back and picking up a free agent to be the starter, but I think it's way more likely they promote Marshall and backfill.

Departure: Jeremy Bridges

Replacement: probably Mackenzy Bernadeau

Bridges wasnt actually a starter anyway. Likely the team goes younger here. What money they spend on the interior may well go to keeping Geoff Hangartner.

Departure: Nick Goings

Replacement: Draft Pick, Free Agent or perhaps Decori Birmingham

You could almost say that Goings has already been virtually replaced. he only saw the field on special teams this season.

Demotion/Departure: Jeff King

Replacement: Draft Pick or Free Agent

Time to stop with the "split tight end" philosophy and get one guy who can block and be a serious receiving threat (I know I'm dreaming on this one).

Demotion: Damione Lewis

Replacement: Draft Pick or Free Agent

Big fan of Lewis, but would rather see him in a situational role (rotating with Kemo) like before with an every down tackle on the other side.

Demotion: Na'il Diggs

Replacement: Draft Pick or Free Agent

His veteran presence is solid, but I do think it's time to get someone younger and faster in that spot and use Diggs as a backup.

There you have my ideas.

(for the record, if so much as a quarter of what I'm suggesting actually happens this offseason, I'll be shocked out of my mind)

I'll be honest. I haven't seen much of Josh McCown. I know he's got some legs on him, but do you really think he could thrive in this offense? I guess you're right...that it is worth a look. I guess the whole David Carr thing is still fresh in my mind. On the other hand, he could be next season's Chad Pennington. Either way, I'd like to see another veteran QB added for insurance reasons. I realize I'm getting ahead of myself, but if Delhomme is done in Carolina, and McCown turns out to be awful, our 09 season could be in serious jeopardy before it even begins.

I like Jeff King, but I'm going to have to agree with you. I can't see the team doing it at all, but having a TE who is a dual-threat is big. You know that you don't have to worry about King busting off a big catch, and most of the time when he's in the game, you know he's there for run support. I don't like personnel packages that key off your plays to the other team. Having a dual-threat TE can be amazingly powerful off play-action, and often times they can be sneaky. It's said that the TE is the easiest target for the QB to reliably hit. Why not give our QB some support here? Sigh, I'm starting to miss Wesley Walls again :(

I've got to agree with you here. I really like Diggs and I think he'd make a great backup. Of course, we've had a number of good LB's in recent year's that we've let go that I really liked. Chris Draft comes to mind as a great depth player. As I've mentioned a few times, I'm in the dark as far as the draft prospects go. Is this a strong year for LB's? Would it be possible for us to find an instant starter in the 2nd or 3rd round?

It just seems like LB's have such a hard time adjusting to our system. Landon Johnson was a good player for Cincinnati. In the pre-season we all thought he was going to take Diggs' starting spot. It took Davis a long time to adjust as well, but I guess that's a pretty bad example seeing as he didn't play the position in college or in his rookie year here. I'd like to think that Beason proves me wrong, but something tells me he's just the exception to the rule.

Imagine if we had a really good QB on this team. We would have raped the hell out of the Cards. I mean they had NO respect for Jake. We had all the pieces in place this year except QB, and it bit us right in the ass. I thought at the start of the season that Jake would be better than in the past. But no, he still has all the same old problems and we saw them all last night. Throwing off his back foot. Hold the ball too long. Throwing inaccurate passes at tightly covered recievers. A lack of pocket awareness. Not properly reading the defense. Going into a total panic and frenzy. Throwing dead-duck interceptions. Chucking it up there and hoping the defense loses it in the lights. Being a whiny babey in the middle of the field in front of every camera. Not improving as the game wore on. Locking his eyes onto one WR the entire route. Only reading one side of the field and never looking to the other side, even though no one on that side is open.

It's time for a new QB.

I agree 100%

It's time for a new QB.

And he cost us 10 million against the cap, will you try and think of the other qb's that take up that much room in cap.

here's the answer

Payton manning

tom brady

carson palmer

eli manning

brett farve

Jake delhomme

the only 6 qb's in the league that have a cap hit over 10 million.

I mean for pete's sake Drew brees makes less money the Jake Delhomme. (Jake makes more in total salary then brees, not just in cap hit)

for those saying pep needs to go and we don't need to break the bank on him, we've already broke the bank on him, his total salary for this past season was over 11 million. my as well keep him and add another studd on the dline and get back to being the dominant defense we were a couple year ago. That is if pep wants to stay.

I dont necessarily agree with all that Mr. Scot presented, but it IS EXACTLY the type of answer I was hoping to get. You were dead on the areas that need fixing though. So many people come here and want people gone, without giving much thought of who we would replace them with.

On the flip side.....

I wholeheartedly agree with pantherj, however, who is his replacement?

As for peppers, it make sense to franchise him. He is gonna want more money long run anyways. I think another year will be a good barometer, if he is worth the money or not. Besides, one year later should mean a little cheaper long run if we do sign/keep him.

I like Mesmer's responses and agree on quite a few things he brings up, but who are the replacements?

    • My projection. I think at WR its time to go with youth. This means Moore should be the odd man out. Horn can return both punts and kicks and Tremayne is a better WR than Moore. XL gets one more year to prove himself, although I could see a trade in the future which would mean Moore could stay. For OL, I would like us to bring back Brady if we can. The RBs, Trevor can return both punts and kicks too. With the uncertainty of Brooks and Dillon, its hard to choose either one. I think the team would like for Brooks to have a breakout season to clear any uncertainty that he deserves a spot. For now, I have them both even and on the team. DL looks solid as well as OLB. Watch out for the UDFA of Aaron Hall and Isaiah Smith at OLB. They look promising and could knock someone off the team. ILB is still the biggest weakness on the team. We need to upgrade that any means necessary. CB is strong and Im praying to all the Gods that Wheatley beats out Scott at FS.  OFFENSE: WR: Tetairoa McMillan - *Chris Brazzell II* - Brycen Tremayne TE: Tommy Tremble - James Mitchell LT: #Rasheed Walker# - *Monroe Freeling* LG: Damien Lewis C- #Luke Fortner# - *Sam Hecht* RG: Robert Hunt - #Saahdiq Charles# RT: Taylor Moton - #Stone Forsythe# TE: Ja`Tavion Sanders - Mitchell Evans WR: Xavier Legette - Jalen Coker - Jimmy Horn Jr. QB: Bryce Young - #Kenny Pickett# RB: Chuba Hubbard - Trevor Etienne - #AJ Dillon# - Jonathon Brooks DEFENSE: LE: Tershawn Wharton - Bobby Brown III  NT: *Lee Hunter* - Cam Jackson RE: Derrick Brown - LaBryan Ray LOLB: Nic Scourton - Patrick Jones II  LILB: Trevin Wallace - Bam Martin-Scott - *Jackson Kuwatch* RILB: #Devin Lloyd# - Claudin Cherrelus  ROLB: #Jaelen Phillips# - Princely Umanmielen LCB: Jaycee Horn - Akayleb Evans RCB: Mike Jackson - *Will Lee III* - Chau Smith-Wade SS: Tre`von Moehrig - Lathan Ransom FS:  Nick Scott - *Zakee Wheatley* - Demani Richardson  SPECIAL TEAMS: K/KO: Ryan Fitzgerald P/H: Sam Martin KR: Trevor Etienne - Jimmy Horn Jr. PR: Trevor Etienne - Jimmy Horn Jr. LS: J.J. • His contract is guaranteed.  Legette is just not where he needs to be mentally.  Not fully invested, it seems.
    • Literally like Hill. He's not QB1 material (now or ever), but if we can turn him into a H-back and use him like  Swiss army knife, that's his ticket to make the roster.  H-back/emergency QB.  I wonder how good his hands are?  If they are at least above average by NFL standards then we can line him up in the backfield, in the slot, split out wide and of course, in the Wildcat.
