Japanese competitive eating champion Takeru 'Tsunami' Kobayashi has been arrested after disrupting America's premier hot dog eating contest in New York.

Police arrested Kobayashi after he reportedly tried to storm the stage as his arch-rival was crowned the victor of this year's competition.

Kobayashi still retains various records from other competitions, including eating 57 cow brains in 15 minutes and 41 lobster rolls in 10 minutes.

I was bored while working today so I actually read about this, and I can't believe I did, worse I can't believe I formed an opinion on it.

Kobi is the most famous glutton in the world, yes, Chestnut beat him at something but Kobi is still more famous, he's obviously somewhat marketable in his homeland and his image can actually sell stuff -- or turn people away, some Japanese see him as vulgar. Would you buy something because Joey Chestnut pitched for it? Probably not.

As a result of his -- relative -- fame Kobi wants to be in charge of his brand. He's an attention *****, a successful Danica Patrick if you will. Major League Eating -- yes, that actually exists -- wants Kobi to sign an exclusive deal with them where he can only do this vile activity when they sanction it, meaning they keep a potential competitor from getting a star. It'd be like if IndyCar refused to let someone good, like Will Power for instance, race in NASCAR because he'd take his fanbase with him. They have a right to do it, but it's a bit scummy. Kobi was protesting that, yes, he was whining, but in a way he has a legit gripe. The reason you didn't hear this on the ESPN telecast was that ESPN doesn't actually pay to show MLE, it's a time buy.

Now I need to read "Aurora Leigh" or something to get my "up-my-own-assness" back.

    • yeah, Panther PR has done the Tepper is taking a backseat PR tour before.   It wasn't true at all the first time we saw them attempt that.   All the stuff you are referencing is stuff produced and put out by the Panthers.  I'm not acting like owners aren't in the war room.   I'm just saying Tepper is a proven commodity.  He is what he is.  And his tenure with BOTH his professional sports teams tell the exact same story about him.   He is not patient.  He didn't show patience last year.  He moved on from an absurd investment 2 games into the season.....and a frankly unimaginable turnaround by Bryce that was only allowed by injury reset some things.  I'm sure a billion times Raiders or Dallas or whatever fans convinced themselves their owners turned a new leaf too.  I'm not buying that.  There just isn't anything supporting Tepper isn't Tepper IMO.
    • Well last year the first team offense struggled against the Bills 3rd string defense. First string offense needed to convert a 4th down to score a TD.  If the starters play against backups and do what they are supposed to do, score easily, I’d say the reps are worth it. Would make me feel better. Unlike last preseason.
    • This right here. You also don’t want your 2 nd string oline going against their starting Dline and risk injury to whoever is taking snaps
