Gantt says Peppers is probably on the way out

I REALLY dont want him to leave personally. But Now I am getting to the point that if he wants to walk then let him walk. He may feel like his duty here is done. I hope he stays but they will continue to be a team whether he is there or not. So I am setting myself up to think he is leaving so if he does...it wont hurt AS much...lol

Letting him go would hurt us alot.

If 14.5 sacks this year is not enough to satisfy those that want Peppers gone, nothing will. I honestly dont know what it will take for you guys to realize that he is still one of the great defensive players we've ever had. Taking plays off? Not reaching his potential? Give me a f*cking break. If that were true, he wouldnt have been selected to his 3rd All-Pro team this year. Geez, a guy has 1 bad year in 2007 and there are still people wanting to get rid of him and saying his inconsistant. Bullsh*t! this year he returned to his normal 10+ sack self. Really, I dont know what games some of you have been watching all year. Getting rid of Peppers will be a HUGE mistake.

I don't think it is a matter of people be dissatisfied with Pep...in my mind he is unquestionably the most talented defensive player in the league. However, why should we pay a guy 80 million bucks to let the defense as a whole be one of the bottom 15-32 in the league?? One player doesn't make a defense...a unit working together makes a defense. I don't think the steelers have a guy on their entire roster that makes more than 40 millions bucks (Polamalu makes 37 I think) and they are the best D in the league. Why pay one guy double that amount when we are consistently out of the top 10?? It doesn't make sense...schemes work better than individual players.

Gantt and Steve Reed both read his comments as hinting that he was on his way out.

I've read them over a couple of times, and I just don't get that sense from them.

He might indeed be, but to me those comments were straight out of the John Fox School of How to Say Absolutely Nothing.

I've got safe money, that says if Trgo is sent packing.......Peppers signs....happily.

If that doesn't happen, then we will franchise him, and get a kings ransom for him in trade.

Heard that idea before.

I know there's no real evidence to support that notion, but I'd also have to say it isn't all that farfetched.

I've tried to be objective in reading Pep's comments, but I figure that it may be the tone, expressions, and kinesics that Gantt and Reed are relying on to come to their conclusions that he's ready to leave.

It was also hard to be objective from the things I've heard about Pep off of the field and from what I've seen myself over the last two years. He just hasn't looked like he wants to be here.

As it stands right now Pep doesn't feel this is a good fit for him right now under the current defensive staff. I think we can all agree on that. That said I'm sure he appreciates everything JR and this organization has done for him so he wants to make a smooth transition.

Obviously we franchise him so we can get something for him and the worst thing that Pep could do is to make a stink at getting out of here cause teams that want him will know that and not give as much for him. It's like a poker game - don't show all your cards to get the most. I think Pep is staying quiet to help us get the most out of this situation and I appreciate that. Jenkins was more vocal so what did we get for him? A 5th rounder or something.

I agree with the posters that say we get the most for our veterans at their peak, a la Pittsburg, NE, etc. Champions are built through the draft (look at Dallas in the early 90's), NOT by spending all you cap room on FA.

The caviat to this is if they fire Trgo (which they should). A change in defensive philosophy might change everything and change Peps mind. I think that is still possible (Hanning got fired after all and we changed our offensive philosophy). Let's see.

    • Possible, he is physical and a forchecker but not a needle mover, but i wouldnt mind it, although I think we have enough 4th line grinders right now between Carrier Robinson and Janakowski  down there, i actually really love our 4th line.            We need scoring in the top 6, and a RHD at this point its definitely coming via trade.            Rasmus Andersson I hear may be on the market, it feels like every couple of seasons someone links us to Erik Karlsson.       As far as centers go,  Marco Rossi (even though we have a ton of smurf already)     Jordan Kyrou is an intriguing option if he is available.           At this point i think Rod should just move Jarvis to his natural center position to give us a 1B center...   yes hes also a smurf but he plays way bigger than he is stylistically.

    • The problem with these summary stats and rankings is that they flatten out progression and assume an even performance throughout the year. His first 3 or 4 games of the season don't really tell you anything about his current level of capacity but more about where he started and what his floor was last year. Given his last several games were against playoff teams, that gives you an idea of his current ability coming into the season. But it will serve more as a floor than a ceiling given the upgrade in talent on offense. And a better defense should give us more stops which results in shorter fields and more opportunities. And going into his third year there is no reason to suspect he will regress. His success wasn't  based on being superhuman but being smart and taking what was the defense was giving him. Distributing to the other guys not trying to do it on his own. He was great at the end when pressured and consistently moved the ball. That makes him a great game manager which is what we need. Something that is easier to do and relies on everyone else rather than having to be a top physical specimen or do it on his own. No one can predict the future but to say we haven't improved much is crazy given just having the Browns anchoring the defensive line will shut down the run and make sure QBs won't be stepping up in the pocket.  Assuming Evero got the message to can the prevent defense and bend until you break philosophy.
