Adam Schefter: Panthers could release Delhomme

2 things about Jake

One, I've heard comparisons to Grossman. That's just ridiculous. Jake led the Panthers to a suberbowl and an NFC championship game, passed to the leading receiver in the league 2 years in a row(Moose 04, Smitty 05) and had a receiver get the triple crown. And not to mention the number of 4th quarter comebacks he's had. Sure he's had some bad games but the comparison to Grossman is absurd.

Two, open competition in training camp next year would mean nothing because Jake would win the job regardless. Who else could come in and know more about this offense and what Fox/Davidson want to do?

They'll live by their QB and die by their QB, while other teams will at least make an effort to improve personnel-wise, we'll walk in next season with the same three guys.

Because this is the John Foxies. Because THIS coaching staff doesn't believe what is obviously winning superbowls in recent history is going to be successful.

Delhomme has had 2 int games, a 3 int game, a 4 int game, and now, finally, a 5 int game. I've seen a dropoff in accuracy, he's 34 years old, he just came back from a major injury, and the coaching staff.... couldn't give less of a sh*t about all the question marks. They're thinking this is the same guy with the same abilities he had in 2003, 2004, etc. The lack of serious consideration is going to hit this team like a f*cking mack truck in the future and all us panther fans have the torment of having to watch the team we love, get turned into an NFL road waffle, and the worst part is, the team will willingly get hit by it because it refuses to make a change.

My god!! It makes too much sense.

That is exactly why there is so much fear and froth about this loss. 14-4 is incredible...a dream season!!....but everything that happened in that playoff game is a microcosm of why this team will never be "great" under the Foxie rules.

Fox's conservative nature works wonders for teams that lack talent. I actually believe Fox would have won 4-6 games in Detroit using his schemes and philosophy. He would establish his players, minimize mistakes and keep everything safe. Something our team needed when he took over.

This team(the Panthers) is capable of so much more and even the most supportive John Fox fan knows it. That debacle is wayyy deeper than Delhomme flinging ducks to Cardinal DBs. Having a clearly rattled QB continue throwing passes on first down shows there is a disconnect to what seems to be game planning and just good coaching.

It was like Fox, Trovac and Davidson were playing Battleship over their head sets:

"B-5......miss."

"A-12.......Dammit! Mike....You sank my battlshi......are we down 28 to 7?"

"I mean have we blitzed yet?? Who is covering Fitz.....oh yeah.......C-13 ......miss"

ohh wait timeout!!! IS IT REALLY HALFTIME??!! ..........D-3......miss

At the end of the day, the Panthers are just another Falcons. 3/4th of the fanbase puts the QB (like Falcons did with Vick) above all other players, fans, and the organization. The fact the franchise and fans are willing to stick with Jake and not even attempt to groom a replacement tells you why this franchise has never had continued success. 5 years from now when Jake is retired and there's no ring to show for this blind loyalty you'll be hearing alot of "what if we had drafted this guy" or "what if Smitty had a real QB to throw to him" talk. Its sad we're so content with being slightly above average rather than go for the gusto.

As long as Jake is our QB there will be a ceiling to how far we go and it doesnt matter what you put around him to try and hide the fact he is not a championship caliber franchise QB, we cant win a title with him as the QB. Id rather gamble on the unknown than stick with something thats proven for 6 years it cant get it done.

:iagree:

Going to be interesting to see how our little microcosm of fans here on the huddle fall apart when Delhomme is gone.

It's impossible that someone better might be next! Once Delhomme is gone we'll have shitty QBs from now till eternity OH NOES!!!!

The franchise might as well fold because once Jake is gone there's no one coming up or else available in the league who can give us the 16 TDs and 17 INTs a year he gives u.

But its not amount the 17 ints he throws man, it's about the HEART he has when he throws them.

Who else could throw for so few yards and that many interceptions with the passion Jake has.

You all know as well as I do that Jake's going to be back next year starting. We won't be bringing back Peppers and we'll be using that money to pay Jake. I've been a fan of Delhomme for as long as he has started but I think its time to look elsewhere. I really want to see Matt Moore start. At least give him a shot. We have a great running game so that would take pressure off of him...I just don't believe Jake's worth the money anymore.

He will definitely be back next year, but it's also time to start preparing for the future.

    • He makes a good point about Wallace.  In fairness to Wallace it is hard to play your position as freely as you need to when your defensive line is getting pushed around like ragdolls.  One of the greatest attributes a defensive line has is sucking up blocks, freeing up your linebackers.  Our defensive line couldn't suck up a lollipop more or less blocks.  I think Evans, Sanders and Tremble are going to be a really nice TE group.  I can see all three getting time on the field.  If Sanders can improve as a blocker teams won't be so inclined to believe it is a pass play whenever Sanders is on the field.  Ryan Fitzgerald, I think was an awesome pick-up. Hopefully he can fill our kicker void. Luke Kandra many turn out to be our next Norwell.  Everything I have heard about him says he's a beast.  He needs some refinement, but the good news is he's got Hunt and Lewis (arguably the best guard tandem in the league) to learn from.
    • Great teams build through the draft and have several young players that start that are on rookie contracts. It's important to hit on players in rounds 4 thru 7.  These should be future starters and solid depth.  When you hit on most of your picks you free up a lot of cap space for those one- or two-year players to fill spots you are thin at. No GM is going to perfect on all their picks.  You're going to whiff every once in a while.  That was Hurney problem.  He'd nail the first pick but after that it was reach after reach and we couldn't get any depth on this team. I'm excited about Morgan as our GM and hopefully he'll be around a long time.  It will be even better if Canales can continue to grow as a head coach, both in the development of young players and play calling. I remember last season after Young came back in the lineup and started to perform well.  We saw different plays I had only seen other teams use.   If Canales's play design and play calling continue to grow. Morgan and Canales will be linked together for a long time.  It would be nice to see a Coach and GM together for a decade or two. Go Panthers
    • They also came out for the encore and the singers were dressed in canes jerseys. Pretty fuging cool.
