Backlash against the Panthers?

Assuming the owners get most of what they want in the new deal, will Jerry’s actions against the Union come back to haunt the Panthers? Why would future free agents want to play for an owner that had a large roll in reducing the money in their pockets? Hopefully that won’t be the case, but I could certainly understand if it happened.

I realize that all owners are involved in this, but Jerry seems to be at the forefront right now.

Because at the end of the day they're all whores. They will play for whoever is writing the biggest check and shows some interest in improving the team.

There will be no backlash. Players seem to like JR and they definitely like money, which he will pay, and the rules will be the same for all teams so it's not like there is an advantage to holding a grudge against him.

But, to my main point: I think you mean "role."

Yes, there will be a backlash against the Panthers & Jerry Richardson but it won’t be from the FA’s first. It’ll be from the players’ union within a month.

The union believes that teams conspired to avoid signing free agents to long-term contracts and circumvented rules regarding rookie draft picks. (Among other shenanigans.) Many team payrolls remained surprisingly low this year, especially considering that the league salary cap was lifted for 2010.

But simply making the accusations in court would be a valuable bargaining ploy when the union and league head back to the table to discuss the next Collective Bargaining Agreement. Making the other side look greedier than yours is half the battle in the war for public relations.

According to one person, the union's collusion case would cite decreased spending by teams on free agent players and a lack of activity on the restricted free agent market last offseason.

Now tell me, what owner does this explicitly describe? Who doesn’t think that JR’s decisions could very well backfire? There’s at least a 50/50 chance, I’d say. The NFL players are a very different type of work force from restaurant workers and he could be over his head with this.

As for once an agreement is signed, if you’re not an owner who demonstrates that you are willing to do what it takes to build a winning team, you won’t get the best players signing here no matter who the coach is because, bottom line, they want to win. To take it further, you probably won’t get the best available coach & staff either. It will be as it always has been, “What have you done lately?” Players will sign, we’ll seek FA’s, but it will not be who you would want. This team will get better only by baby steps and it will take years.

i agree completely. Even if it is only for one season, free agents see that JR doesnt care about winning. if you are a superstar player, who wants to win a superbowl, do you choose to go to carolina, where the owner doesnt care if we win a superbowl, or do you choose to go to new england, or the Jets, or minnesota, where they know that the owner will do whatever it takes to try to win.

also, look at how jerry is treating our own players. look at beason kalil and deangelo. why in the hell havent they been negotiated with. these guys have done alot to improve our team, but jerry doesnt want to pay them.

if i were a supersar athlete, i am not so sure i would want to play here...

I don't think superstar athletes want to play here anyway. When Randy Moss decided he wanted out I doubt Carolina was on his short list even if we were 4-1. We are a middle market team. But besides the superstars anyone would want to play here I'm sure

But to be fair to JR he doesn't seem to care about winning this year. I don't think that has been the case for the other 15 years of the franchise. I doubt this legacy will last long as soon as he opens the purse strings a little
