Fox: "Matt Moore gives us the best chance to win"

Clausen has played three games, 1 1/2 of which were bad...give the guy 5 games and we can see. You don't give up on a 2nd round pick QB after 2 3/4 games. That's just dumb. Especially when he wasn't consistently bad, he was solid vs. New Orleans. I wanna see him play several more games so we can get an idea of what he can do.

Clausen wasn't solid against NO. Not standing out b/c of poor play isn't solid play.

also, Moore's 3 games > Clausen's 3 games.

I would like to see some more too, but I do think Moore gives us the best chance to win right now. Another showing like today, though, and it'll look more like those good performances are the anomalies. =(

I'd start Moore next week but I wouldn't commit to him like he has. I just don't understand why one good game against SF negates so many more awful games.

Because Clausen hasn't had any good games. Moore is a terribad QB, but Clausen had a shot to make his case and didn't.

Again, do you really think it matters?

it's not just that... it's also how little faith Fox has in Clausen.

Fox doesn't really care that much if Clausen gains valuable experience for the future, because he won't be here to see it. So, he's going with who gives him the best shot to win, which is Moore.

it could matter in the long term. Clausen had a decent game, but not a good one... however, he hasn't had a good situation or a good game plan.

He could gain valuable experience for the long term, but since none of these coaches will be here, I don't see the point.

I don't think Clausen is going anywhere, btw. He'll likely be here next year, and he may play later in the year if Moore can't get it done... but for now, we're going to go with the only QB that has won us a game this year.

CRA, do you think we should just give up on Clausen and get rid of him after less than 3 games? Just wondering what your thoughts are on that.

Clausen didn't do anything special in those 3 games, that means he'll never do anything special. We need to use our first round pick on another qb and give him 3 shots to see what he has. Then the year after, we should use our first round pick to draft the next qb sensation and give him 3 games.

Yep.

This is all resume work for Fox at this point. Why would he give a poo who starts next year? He wants to pad out as many wins as he can, add some money to his next contract and move on outta town.

I think Moore is better than Clausen, but not by a very big margin. I doubt Fox cares, at all, about future prospects of either guy. He's going to ride whomever is best for the now.

I see what you're saying...I'd bet Clausen will at the very least play out his rookie contract here. I don't see Hurney giving up on him so quickly, he's got a several-year deal (3 or 4, forgot). You know what I'd really like? The running game propelling us to just one more win.

Exactly. Clausen isn't much worse at all, and I personally believe he has higher upside (though others have disagreed). That being said, Moore gives us the better chance for now. If Fox can put together a decent ending to this season, get us up to 6-10 or 7-9, he'll look much better than if we go 4-12 or lower while preparing for next season.

Clausen will at least be here next year and should at least get play time in the preseason and a chance to compete for the #2 if not the #1.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
