Our Franchise QB!

The truth is the Panthers have never had a franchise QB!

We all thought it would be Kerry Collins, but we all know how that worked out for multiple reasons.

By the time Steve Beuerlein got here he was a solid qb, but still in the twilight of his career.

And Jake Delhomme was the true diamond in the rough, the ultimate underdog story, the kind of stuff sports movies are made out of and he came within seconds of reaching an unprecedented accomplishment of becoming a superbowl winning QB and he was a great person, but all that being said he wasn't a franchise guy!

The Panthers need some one who is a potential pro bowler every year, a guy worth 5 wins just by him self. Atlanta has this with Matt Ryan something they never dreamed of after the Vick fiasco. New Orleans has this in Drew Brees. And the bucs may have this with Josh Freeman. But at this point we do not. He may be on this roster, but so far i think it is fair to say it doesn't look promising. The good news is we have 8 games to potentially find this out. The truth is the Panthers have really only looked for a true franchise guys on 2 occasions Collins in the expansion draft, and the Clausen this year.

If the guy isn't on the roster the Panthers will have a good shot to find their guy in the draft next year in the form of Andrew Luck, Ryan Mallett, or another Jake, Jake Locker. And the odds are no matter what the QB situation is now when a new coach comes in he will want to have his own guy under center, its just the way it usually works in the NFL.

Until we find our guy at QB we as fans can forget about ever winning a division, much less a world championship in today's NFL. Yeah we may have a good year once every four years, but we will never be the winning program that Jerry Richardson truly wants here. For now we can only hope, wait, and see if we will find our guy!

Thanks as always Panther Nation stay strong!

This has been the biggest problem with Fox. Until this year, he's always kept the team competitive, and never bad enough to have a real shot at a franchise guy.

Jag I totally agree for year after year we have constantly ignored the most important position in team sports!

Seriously when have we had a chance to draft a franchise guy. We haven't picked top 10 since 2002 when we picked up Peppers. And how many franchise quarterbacks come up in free agency. 2 in the past 8 years with Brees and Cutler. It isn't like we blew a bunch of chances. We did try and bring in Carr but it was a disaster. Lets see what happens this year and we should know if the priorities have changed if we draft one this year.

Cutler wasn't a FA. The Bears traded for him and gave up a good bet. It's also definitely up in the air on whether or not he's a franchise QB.

Brees is the only guy in recent memory.

Yeah I knew that, I don't know why I said free agent. They traded two first rounders for him a third rounder and Kyle Orton.. So far it looks like a poor trade.

"The truth is the Panthers have really only looked for a true franchise guys on 2 occasions Collins in the expansion draft, and the Clausen this year."

Pretty much not really. The Panthers certainly weren't looking for Clausen in 2010, he just happened to fall that far into Carolina's lap. When it came time for Carolina's pick and Clausen was still on the board they couldn't afford not to say, "No."

It was pure luck... Clausen just has yet to show us whether it was bad or good luck- and we're leaning towards the bad...

Other than that, you're absolutely right and I find it inexcusable this team, since Kerry Collins, has never made any kind of bold move either on draft day or in free agency to put a franchise QB in a Panther uni. I'm sure somebody with more time on their hands could probably tell us just how many free agent QBs have gone elsewhere that Carolina had legitimate opportunities to sign.

Hurney said they tried to move up early on in the draft to take Clausen, They thought he was gone when Arizona traded up. Hurney said they were high on him as a QB and promised him he'd be the future of the franchise.

    • He'd be a huge upgrade for this year, but we're still not going to be contenders with him and I'd rather keep the cap space to roll into next season to spend on a younger player who can be an impact starter for us for the next 3-5 years while we're hoping to contend.
    • Because playoff hockey and regular season hockey aren’t the same thing.  It’s a combination of the game intensity being dialed up with loose officiating.
    • The last 8 weeks, Nix had 2,022 yards, 21 TDs, 6 INTs on 70% completions While Bryce's last 8 games he had 1,709 yards, 12 TDs (albeit adding 5 more rushing), 3 INTs on 61% completions. I'm not going to pretend I watched those Broncos games to know exactly how Nix actually looked, but in retrospect, his statistics were better.  Hell, in just his final 8 games, Nix had only 5 less TD passes than Bryce has in his 30 game (28 starts) career. And you said he had better WRs than Bryce did, but I'm not even sure that's even true either. Sutton and Thielen might be completely different types of WRs, but I'd say they are pretty equal on effectiveness if not even a slight edge to Thielen (63.6 YPG for Sutton to 61.5 for Thielen).  Then XL and Coker vs Marvin Mims and Devaughn Vale, again, at worst a push, if not lean in our favor there too. Why is it so hard for some Panthers fans to just objectively look at our team/Bryce and be honest with themselves. ? He was significantly improved the final two months of the season from his first season and a half.  But he was still a below average QB during that time, even if he had a few good throws and clutch moments.
