Not gonna lie, the future looks bleak

People have been claiming that Matt Ryan is the real deal since his rookie year.

I don't care that he won roty after his rookie season. Kid was carried by a great Oline that barely let him get touched and a 1700 yard rb in Turner.

Last year, his qb rating was about the same as Delhomme's used to be (80).

He has had a good game here and there. He has had the rare great game a handful of times. It's still to be determined though if he is the "real deal".

The Saints, Falcons and Bucs are also proof of how quickly fortunes can change in this league.

The Saints went through Katrina, talk of relocating, etc, etc, then they got Brees and immediatley become a contender.

The Bucs rebuilt, drafted Freeman, went through the same hell for the last two years that we're going through this year and now look at them.

The Falcons lost Vick, had a coach quit on them mid-season, put them in position to draft Ryan and now they are a legit contender as well.

When you're at the bottom of the pit (where we are right now) it's hard to see how you are going to climb out of it, but you can climb out of it quickly and be a contender before you know it.

18-1 at home. But if you want to give all 18 of those wins to the crowd, Turner, White, and his O-Line, go ahead.

Do you credit most of those wins because of Ryan?
i'll say they wouldn't have those wins without ryan. i have no problem saying that.

in '07, that OL played incredible but they did it because of ryan. they played above their usual level. turner has only ever done well against really bad run defenses, indoors on artificial turf. he's a stud then but he's really average any other time.

ryan is just polished and cool (under pressure, that is). i hate it, but they have an incredible QB there. he may not be peyton manning, but he is one of a few QBs i would feel good building a franchise around.

You got me thinking, so I went back through his first 2 and a half season at home.

Don't mind the wall of text.

1. Lions@. Turner has 220 yards 2 TDs

2.Chiefs@. Turner has 3 Tds 100+ yards.

3. Bears@. Ryan has 300 yards 1 td. (Due to Ryan)

4.Saints@. Ryan has 2 TD, 248 yards. Falcons defense was key in the win though, collecting 3 interceptions off Brees.

5. Broncos@ Loss

6.Panthers@. Ryan threw 0 TDs. Outplayed by Delhomme. Turner ran for 4 TDs.

7.Bucs@. Ryan has 0 td 2 int. But Falcons win with Turner rushing for 158 yards and 1 td.

8.rams@. Ryan has 1 td 2 ints. Won because of Turner's 208 yards on the ground and 1 td.(Also Norwood's 2 TDs on the ground.)

1. Phins@. Ryan has 220+ Yards 2 Tds. (due to Ryan)

2. Panthers@. Ryan has 3 TDs 1 int. (due to Ryan)

3.Bears@ Both Ryan and Cutler had 2 TD 2 Int. Only difference is, Turner managed to get a TD.

4. Skins@. Ryan 135 yards 1 TD, 1 int. Turner 166 yards 2 Tds.

5. Bucs@. Even backup Qb Redman had 243 yards, 2 TDs against the Bucs.

6.Eagles@. Redman has 235 yards 1 td, 2 int. (L)

7.Saints@. Redman has 303 yards. 1 Td 1 int. (L)

5.Ravens@. Ryan has 300+ yards, 3 TD. Arguably Ryan's best game.

For the most part, it seems the Falcons run game has been key. Also, their defense has really stepped up in a few of those wins. Ryan has been just a cog in most of those games. Only excelling in a small handful. He gets the credit though because he is on a winning team.

Much like Sanchez got the credit last year for leading the Jets to the AFCCG. Even though, he only played decent in one or two games while being average to below average in the others. Not comparing Ryan to Sanchez but the hype has definitely been there.

This post is a rip off of one i posted during the atl game see:

Our Franchise QB!

The truth is the Panthers have never had a franchise QB!

We all thought it would be Kerry Collins, but we all know how that worked out for multiple reasons.

By the time Steve Beuerlein got here he was a solid qb, but still in the twilight of his career.

And Jake Delhomme was the true diamond in the rough, the ultimate underdog story, the kind of stuff sports movies are made out of and he came within seconds of reaching an unprecedented accomplishment of becoming a superbowl winning QB and he was a great person, but all that being said he wasn't a franchise guy!

The Panthers need some one who is a potential pro bowler every year, a guy worth 5 wins just by him self. Atlanta has this with Matt Ryan something they never dreamed of after the Vick fiasco. New Orleans has this in Drew Brees. And the bucs may have this with Josh Freeman. But at this point we do not. He may be on this roster, but so far i think it is fair to say it doesn't look promising. The good news is we have 8 games to potentially find this out. The truth is the Panthers have really only looked for a true franchise guys on 2 occasions Collins in the expansion draft, and the Clausen this year.

If the guy isn't on the roster the Panthers will have a good shot to find their guy in the draft next year in the form of Andrew Luck, Ryan Mallett, or another Jake, Jake Locker. And the odds are no matter what the QB situation is now when a new coach comes in he will want to have his own guy under center, its just the way it usually works in the NFL.

Until we find our guy at QB we as fans can forget about ever winning a division, much less a world championship in today's NFL. Yeah we may have a good year once every four years, but we will never be the winning program that Jerry Richardson truly wants here. For now we can only hope, wait, and see if we will find our guy!

Thanks as always Panther Nation stay strong!

you should start a new thread posting this very same thing!

The defense is already there, if we could just run the ball like last season Moore/Clausen would have solid or even great games. It's all about the trenches, O-Line and D-Line make or break a team. And we don't have ether, our LB's/DB's are what keep us in the fight.

Look at Freeman and the Buc's. They were like us, Freeman was garbage his rookie year and I bet you they wanted to throw him under the bus, just like you "fans" want to do to Clausen. Clausen is just scared, hell I would be too if my team had no O-Line and we couldn't run the ball. 3rd & 8 and I'm reacting to a heavy rush? yeah, I'm going to be scared and throw like Jake Delhomme.

too much... just too much. people don't read into it this much. teams have their shitty seasons here and there, it's bound to happen. we'll be back in a couple years. unless you're 75 and on your death bed, them sucking for a couple years won't kill you.

first year the falcons did what any smart team would with a rookie QB...run run run. they were 2nd in the league for run attempts (behind the other team that started a rookie QB that year and made it to the playoffs). turner helped them for sure, but they wouldn't have pulled off that many wins without ryan. he led that team to the playoffs utilizing an offense that was geared towards making him successful (ie, minimizing mistakes). he manged those games well and made it possible for the run game to do well. he spread out the defense enough for turner (or any RB, actually) to do well. look at what happens when snelling comes in to replace turner. you don't have much of a drop off and you have an RB that is actually useful on 3rd downs.

point is, the run game does well because the passing game is respectable. from ryan's very first throw in the league, teams knew that this was a guy they would have to account for. the run game helped him win games, but it was his performance that enabled the run game to do so well...well enough that you could plug just about any RB in there and do well. thats the same reason the saints were able to have any success with their run game using scrubs the last time they played us.

oh...and he gets the credit because he deserves it.

08, I made a post like this after everyone said its a QB driven league. I showed that like 6 out of the top 8 teams in the NFL are led by great running games and defenses and only two (Manning and Brady) are led by throw first teams.

Your post reaffirms that. Without a strong running game Ryan is likely to struggle. Hell the Steelers won 3 games with QBs off the street because of their defense and their running game. More cases than not the running game sets up a good passing game, no matter how many times you are told that it's changing.

Look at our team, no run game this year, we look bad.
