Carson Palmer is done

didn't carson palmer have the same surgery jake delhomme had?

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer is unlikely to play another game in the 2008 season but he will delay a decision on whether to have surgery to repair a "frayed" ligament in his right throwing elbow, sources told ESPN.

Palmer's injury is to one portion of the ulnar collateral ligament and he has been told that Tommy John surgery would repair the problem with positive results, the sources said. However, doctors have agreed that Palmer's conservative approach to such an operation is acceptable because the damage is more limited than what Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme suffered a year ago when he had the surgery.

there's a lot of similarities to be drawn here... tough veteran leaders whose leadership skills are supposed to make up for any insufficiences as a quarterback.

If I'm not mistaken, he elected not to have the surgery, instead he let the ligaments heal on their own. It was the same injury that Jake had though, although his injury was not as severe.

It is somewhat funny; Palmer has put up 19 TDs, 15 INTs and 2700 yards. Reading this thread and some of the Bungals ones, you'd think he was Brian St. Pierre... or Jimmy Clausen.

Love those garbage time stats against prevent D

Palmer's never been benched no matter how sorry he's played. I just dont think a QB can thrive in an environment like that. Palmer was praised just this offseason for displaying "leadership" by calling out Ocho Cinco for not coming to OTA's. Palmer is very overpaid considering he's never had postseason success. There's never been a national story about benching Carson Palmer or examining his shortcoming as a QB. If Palmer had any kind of pressure to win or lose his job he would've had a better career and the Bengals might be a better football team. As is, they're 2-10 and on their way to the lottery. I think the Bengals should draft Cam Newton.

So if you were the Bengals would you bench him for...his little brother?

  • 3 weeks later...

Yeah, he's looked horrible this year. And you gotta put a big bulk of their failures at his feet, because with the weapons they have on offense, there's no reason they should be that bad.

IMO, he's never been the same since Von Oelhoffen (sp?) blew up his knee in the playoffs years back. He was on the verge of greatness prior to that...

Now, he just sucks, and I think he's done there as well. Additionally, I don't want him here as some have suggested, even if it's relatively cheap, lol.

    • Watched the recent Mic'd up which had the Bucs game. This angle makes that fumble look so much worse, pretty sure it was inbetween Bryce's hands.   bbb.mp4
    • Here is what you did not mention (and I have not read the thread--but will--it is a needed) and that is the MAFF.  He is in a contract year (2026-5th year) and we will not know (in all likelihood) how the knee is healing by the time we have to decide on a mega deal.   If you consider the time it takes to fully heal is 12 months if all goes well, the injury is known to shorten careers.  Of course, a man of 330 lbs who needs agility to perform at a high level makes the injury a bit more serious than it was for Jimmy Graham, for example, who recovered in a remarkable 9 months.  Having said all that, I think he should be moved inside to guard.   While many NFL linemen can return to play after patellar tendon surgery, studies show a significant failure rate and reduced performance, with return-to-play (RTP) rates often cited around 50-56%, meaning roughly 44-50% don't make it back, and even those who do often see reduced careers and statistics, highlighting it as a devastating injury for linemen." I think you have to go after an elite OT, and I think it should be a first rounder because you don't sign elite LTs in free agency.  Ickey is already going to get paid $18m or so in 2026.    However, the money you save by not locking him down long term could go to a free agent edge or ILB.  It is very complicated if you start factoring in contracts, risks, cap, and the odds of recovery.
    • Yes, we played the 2nd most cover 3 in the NFL behind the Raiders.   The flats and seams are the areas you want to attack it so its soft spots are areas qbs can hit quickly which can definitely hurt the pass rush.
