What if we trade the 1st overall pick?

Everyone has been clamoring about getting the first overall pick and who we'll select with it. However, what if JR and company don't want the financial burden of a #1 overall? We surely got rid of it the only other time we had it. Seems to me that the Panthers may feel they can get a much better value by getting multiple players versus the first. I think it's even more true if Luck doesn't declare for the draft.

The first overall pick carries considerable weight and is actually difficult to shop out (unless one is willing to drop expectations), but why does everyone think we're so keen on keeping it?

In 1995, we were an expansion team. We had about half a roster (if that). Not the same situation, but even then, the #5 pick was very well paid.

Just a few years ago, we had the #2 overall pick, used it, and again paid the player accordingly.

People are letting this year's "youth movement" block out their memory of overall team history.

Yes, we could trade the pick, but if we do it won't be because we don't want to pay.

Franchise QBs don't grow on trees and one of the most complete prospects in years could possibly be coming out this year. Considering no one else in the draft is nearly as big an impact player as Luck could be, you have to take him. If he doesn't come out then I'm all for trading down as the next 5 to 10 players are fairly similar talent wise.

John Fox didn't believe in the "franchise QB" model, and yet even he took Jimmy Clausen.

Suggesting that the Panthers don't believe in that idea ignores not only the Clausen pick, but also the fact that they used the very first overall draft pick in team history on a player who they thought would turn out to be just that.

There may be a rookie salary cap in place before the draft. It's in everyone's interest to get that done.

I seriously doubt Fox "took" Clausen.

Clausen was taken for Fox is more like it. I doubt Fox had much of anything to say about it.

I think the Clausen pick is a bit ambiguous. I don't think using that pick on him illustrated that the Panthers want a franchise QB or that they're willing to pay top dollar to a QB. Clausen fell dramatically and at the point he came to us, he was basically chump change for the possibility of him developing. It wasn't terribly risky because they didn't need to invest that much and Fox was holding on by a string. It made sense to take a risk on Clausen due to where he fell in the draft.

But with #1 overall and the money involved (especially when considering the payout Bradford received) it just seems against most of the Panthers philosophy. Would a new coach change that philosophy? Surely to a degree, but I think JR and company are still within that old mindset.

In the end, I think the Panthers will certainly send out feelers on trading it away. I don't think it will happen unless the stars align, but I think it is a possibility, especially if Luck stays in school.

I think if Lucks there we take him number 1, problem about trading however is that if Luck isn't there I don't see another player that would make people trade up to get. A top DT is nice but people know you can still get talent later rounds. This draft is deep at corner so no ones gonna trade up to get one. In all I think were stuck with the number 1 pick.

      Either way there's some tough teams on the schedule this year, on paper anyways.

      Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.

      Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
