Do you wait til draft day to pick Luck?

Recommended Posts

Once January 15th is over, all college players declare (including Luck in this scenario). We are officially on the clock.

Now we will ether:

1. Sign him before the draft.

2. Wait til day 1 of the draft to pick him (scares me)

3. Wait til day 1 of the draft to trade the pick away (really scares me).

If we wait til the day of the draft to secure our future franchise QB it will mean (to me anyway) that Hurney believes he can grab additional picks and still work with Clausen.

What scenario would you guys like to happen? Because I don't even want to debate waiting til day 1 and seeing all the trade offers, I want to secure the QB position ahead of time and call it a day. Start the party early. Who's with me?

Gets in a car wreck.

Trips and tears all ligaments in knee.

You wait until the night before the draft to enter into discussions with the no.1 overall pick. Too much can go wrong.

The Panther should and will have contract discussions and agreements with several players leading up to the draft. They may even have a deal done, as much as possible considering the CBA situation, but will not make the official pick until the draft begins.

Why?

Because many things can happen in a matter of seconds and to put yourself in a position where you have committed before you have to is foolish.

However, if Luck declares and he is their pick, the Panther need to know if he is willing to come to Carolina or if he pulls an Elway/Manning. And they can do that in private but they need to know one way or another.

Yes, you wait until draft day. That way, everyone is talking about you until the draft. The Panthers get mentioned in every draft article written. If they publicly announce anything, the #2 pick becomes the #1 pick and we become an afterthought.

The smart PR and media thing to do would be wait and keep everyone guessing. The more the Panthers are mentioned, the more shirts and hats are sold.

But if you identify Luck as the chosen one and there's a CBA you work behind the scenes to get a dollar figure lined up.

The Panthers know where Luck's contract number will be. You have to have him on the dotted line so he doesn't miss one second of training camp. None of this holdout BS and late to camp and a year wasted thank you.

There is no reason why he would miss any camp. Talking to his agent earlier would not help things as everything works toward that camp deadline for negotiations to heat up anyways.

It would help if the Panthers and Luck agree on a contract number.

We don't want a Jamarcuss Russell type holdout/contract negotiation.

Not comparing Luck to Russell, just what can happen when a number one overall and a team don't agree on a number.

    • This season only ends one way... We win this Sunday. Bryce is decent. We take back 1st place...   Only to then get our brakes blown off in the last two weeks.
    • Here's one of the most maddening things, that will be shown in full light over the next three weeks. The same people around here that called Darnold a bum and Mayfield a washed up over draft are also the ones saying Bryce is a catastrophe. Yeah, and I've been one who said Bryce wasn't big enough, brave enough or capable enough. I said back in the day that Darnold had a lot of fight in him and got shouted down. And on Mayfield, heck I didn't know, I just knew we had a very, very bad team that was run terribly. But I saw both of those guys go out there and resurrect their careers and be play-off bound since shaking the Carolina clay dust off their cleats. And we sat there and cat called their cars as they pulled out of the parking lot, laughing at what nobodies they were. Over the next three weeks, those two guys may just serve us sh!t sandwiches and then settle down to their just desserts. And then we'll probably let Bryce go off into the realm of other teams. And when that happens, will we see him coming back, better than before and we're left to re-sit this cycle all over again? Same naysayers, same results, same revolving carousel of ponies and pundits?  Will we end up looking like the Temu version of the San Diego Chargers back in the day watching Drew Brees come to fruition in the previously moribund Superdome while we whiff on a Manning pick just to be jilted for Phillip "Always a Bridesmaid" Rivers?
