28 Free Agents

Lets say the current CBA expires in March as anticipated. There is a lockout as anticipated. The lockout drags into July/August as anticipated.

JR said we are not signing ANY players until the new CB is in place.

How in the hell is Hurney going to negotiate and sign the majority of our "core guy" free agents that Richardson wants to build the team around in such a short window of time between CBA agreement and training camp? We could go into training camp (if there is one) in very bad shape.

Sum-a-bitch, I do not envy Hurney. Cancel any late summer weekend plans Marty.

Almost all our free agents will be restricted so Hurney can slap tenders on them in late Feb. which should prevent most of them from getting snatched away before a new CBA is in place.

I doubt any teams would be willing to shell out a draft pick and a huge contract to a player until they know there will be games played this fall.

I'm not so much concerned with how/when we'll sign them, I'm concerned that if we follow JR's plan regarding the the CBA and not signing guys until the new one is done, they'll just get signed up by other owners that ARE still willing to conduct business.

Like has been said a million times, it's either gonna end up genius on the otherside of the CBA or have us standing with egg on our face. The other owners aren't as concerned with the "bad business model" as he is, and kept conducting business as usual... Just hope it doesn't continue with our free agents. It's already manifested itself in frustration with guys, like Marshall for instance.

the big question is will we be able to put tags on certain players to keep them from signing with other teams as soon as a new CBA is agreed to? or will they all be unrestricted free agents?

mainly referring to Kalil and Charles Johnson.

yep. who knows what the new CBA will allow. Hurney could be faced with a poo storm. He better be laying the foundation now, which I'm sure he is.

.

Teams can sign their own players/free agents back. However no team can sign a free agent from another team until a new CBA is in place because there will be no free agency period. That is why there is a deadline for it to be signed.

In otherwords, no team can just sign our players away.

    • Bryce and Dave will determine how many games this team wins next year. It’s not on the WRs. The RBs. LBs. This is about 2 things: 1. Can Bryce continue to come up big in the few key downs that decide most games?  2. Can Canales evolve his play calling to counter punch like the big boys do. Half time adjustments.  teams that score 30+ points on the regular win more games than not. That’s on Bryce and Dave. The offense is top 10 at every position group, save for TE and QB. A baller TE is gravy but not crucial when the receivers are dudes.  The defense is the defense. It’ll be better this season, hopefully by a large margin, but Dave/Bryce is really where it’s at.
    • Normally I'd wholeheartedly agree with this. But I feel like teams figured out this offense after the Raiders game. Bryce was so inept the first 2 games that we couldn't really even run the offense. Dalton's first game showed what we had. But after that game, coverages got a lot tighter and windows were smaller. When Bryce came back in, his ability to extend plays made a big difference. It's really difficult to stop a QB that can beat/escape 1on1 tacklers. It puts a lot of pressure on the defense when you blitz. And he was completing throws in tight coverage with anticipation. Point being Bryce wasn't throwing to wide open receivers that were schemed open by the offense. Occasionally yes. But not often.
    • With the additions we've made to our roster combined with the state of the division and the conference as a whole there is no excuse for this team not to make a legitimate push for 8-9 wins. Anything less is honestly inexcusable. There will be no more free passes for being a doormat in this iteration of the league where even mediocre teams are competing for playoff spots.
