Mortensen Trashes Richardson/Luck to Panthers on Mike and Mike

I heard Mort say the same thing late yesterday on NFL live. One of the reasons that JR's presser yesterday was so bad. He didn't do anything to help the Panther image of being cheap. Hell he said he didn't believe in Fox but kept him around because he didn't want to pay him and a new coach. Sorry but that is cheap for the NFL. Don't tell me how he spent money in the past, he's cheap as hell the last year plus. it continues with the bargain basement coaches search he is conducting. Hell I'm looking for a giant blue light on top the stadium soon. The smart thing would have been to bring in Gruden or Harbaugh for interviews so you at least give the image of not being cheap.

And yes this stuff effects Luck, how can it not. Not to mention JR's dismissing Harbaugh as a coach in yesterday's PC. Sure that will go over well with Luck. Yesterday's presser should have been a full on image improvement session, but made things worse.

only a fool would think it's smart to let a coach go a year before the CBA is about to get blown up..

he had one of the highest paid coaching salaries.. and paid 6 million to a coach to stick around 1 more year.. how that is cheap is beyond me..

that's paying a lot of money for no reason, would that be a correct assessment?

usually that's the opposite of cheap... and to pay another 2-5 million on top of that with so many questions to be answered would be foolish..

only a fan who can't see the forest through the trees would think otherwise.. and only the ignorant sports media would say different with their eyes only on a story, whether it's legit or not..

either situation is hardly worth taking as intelligent or trust worthy..

Geez, I see some other coaches that were fired last year and this year with the CBA hanging in the wind. What is foolish is to say you don't believe in a coach, but keep him around because you don't want to pay him and a new coach. Hell Denver just went through Shannanan and McDaniels. Honestly are we to believe that if the new coach sucks ass, that JR will fire him and get someone new. His current attitude creates a lot of doubt. This is big time professional sport, you don't keep a coach around if you don't believe he can win and turn a team around. Remember, I said don't tell me about the money JR spent in the past, because Fox's 6million plus contract was signed years ago. What he is doing now is cheap by NFL standards.

The problem is that we need him to declare before we can do all that, and with crap like this floating out there daily, he may figure he's in a better situation than what he would be coming to here.

I think that is a valid point.I feel he will want to feel warm and fuzzy about the future direction of the team.It seemed to me that in JRs interview he seemed defensive and really did not project any enthusasm for a player wanting to be a part of the Panthers.

Richardson had the 5th highest paid coaching staff out of 32 teams ($11.4 million). You think that because he didn't fire them and keep paying them that 5th highest salary on TOP of paying a whole new coaching staff, that he is cheap? I just don't see it.

The Panthers are not a team that Mortensen gets much inside info on, and I would say he probably resents that.

He's been wrong in predictions about the Panthers numerous times before (said we'd go for Umenyiora, predicted Delhomme cut in 2006, said we'd trade up for Matt Ryan, etc), With that track record, it's not hard to believe he has no actual contacts here and is just speculating.

Anything he says about the Panthers is to be taken with a grain of salt.

whether you believe in the current coach you are paying or not doesn't make it a good idea to fire him midseason.. there are only 2 teams who kept their coaches after firing them and that is the Cowboys and Vikes..

Do I need to point out only those 2 teams had coordinators in high demand?

the other teams did not improve by firing their coach and those coaches that took over for said fired coach will not be there next year as HC regardless..

I'm not sure what you gain by firing Fox midseason only to get rid of the interim coach anyhow...

The players kept playing for Fox and if you really want to see a sinking ship, give them a reason to stop playing...

so you DO keep a coach around 1 more year for players that never gave up on him.. whether he's your future or not, you let the seas calm for one more year and then decide what direction you want to follow..

any points not valid that I brought up?

I wish he had been right on a few of those predictions

Ugh, Mortensen is wrong.

The CBA expires in March, and rookies are not signed until June-July.

Rookie wage scale will be in place by the time they are signed.

and if I am wrong, good for us. That is a guarantees that Luck will come out. No way he gives aways 25-30 million dollars.

I don't know the rules.

Couldn't we come to an agreement with Luck earlier than the draft?

    • Just to clarify: I'm not arguing that height or footwork can’t affect QB play. I'm asking how those concerns translate into measurable, consistent outcomes. That’s the standard we should be applying to all QBs, not just Bryce. If height is such a limitation, then we'd expect to see elevated batted passes or poor pressure evasion. Yet none of that shows up in the data. Bryce was one of the lowest in the league for batted passes and his 16.9 pressure-to-sack ratio is good enough for 9th out of all QBs with 300+ dropbacks. So if you believe footwork tied to height is a meaningful issue, what metric shows that because two that would aren't doing so? This isn't about denying flaws. It's about applying fair, consistent standards because otherwise we’re not evaluating performance which means that it's not analysis taking place... it's just going off of the vibes that somebody has consciously decided on. Citing one red zone play you remember doesn't provide that consistent standard. I don't say that to dismiss your memory, but to emphasize that anecdotal evidence (especially from an avowed skeptic) shouldn’t carry more weight than consistent tape or analytics. For example, there was recently dissonance over Bryce's deep ball accuracy where it was implied that he was inaccurate throwing 20+ yards. Yet, the data and film show otherwise. And I unfortunately have to still ask since you won't directly answer: What specific metrics do you believe matter when evaluating whether a QB is top-10? You've mentioned YPA and passing yards per game, and that's fair. If that's what you're prioritizing, then let's call that your criteria but clarity matters because it prevents moving goalposts when the data doesn’t match one's expectations. I appreciate the response and hope that your holiday weekend goes well also. ❤️
    • Me too. I got other things I can do. Tie it up 2-2 and I will be back, but Im tired of watching us get swept.
