Get the censors ready...Rob Ryan WILL interview with the Panthers

So after a relatively quick media search involving the 3 above links, I will say this:

He is passionate about football. He is foul mouthed. He is incredibly aggressive on the defensive side and prefers a 3-4 (but has lead a VERY good 4-3) if his time as DC of the Raiders & Browns is any indication. He left the Patriots to go to Oakland where he survived numerous coaching purges before he finally fell out of favor himself with Al Davis, but he did not seem to harbor many ill feelings towards him. He was fired by Oakland, was out of the league for a few years (speculation he would go to NY was quashed), then went to Cleveland with Mangini.

He was interviewed for Oakland's headcoaching spot but he didn't get it (I think it went to Kiffin instead?). So he has interviewed before.

Based on stats alone I prefer Rivera, but the number of times Rivera has interviewed makes me wonder about him. Does anyone have any knowledge of his personality or anything? It's clear the kind of guy Rob Ryan is, but not Rivera...

12/2009 - Browns' Ryan says time with Oakland was jolly )

when former players (@ oakland) start coming out of the woodwork to praise the guy and insist that he deserves a head coaching job (like numerous bears players have for rivera) then i'll consider that there might be something else there worth considering. until then, i'm staying on the rivera train that i've been riding since november.

Ok I took a minute to look at Rob Ryan's work as a DC because I agree with everyone who is saying I should go back and look at his body of work rather than discount him out of hand because he's another Browns coach.

League Rank By Pts/G | Yards/g

2004 (Raiders) -> 31 | 30

2005 (Raiders) -> 25 | 27

2006 (Raiders) -> 18 | 3

2007 (Raiders) -> 28 | 22

2008 (Raiders) -> 24 | 27

2009 (Browns) -> 21 | 31

2010 (Browns) -> 13 | 22

In red are the only two times his defenses have even cracked the top half of the league in either category. I'm not an NFL statistician nor am I a professional analyst - but in 7 seasons of being a DC he has produced defenses that clearly consistently not only have the ball moved on them but are scored on as well (discounting the bend but don't break idea that some coaches are in love with). It seems to me that they were consistently less than mediocre.

He may yet end up as a great coach but I just don't see a lot in the last 7 seasons to get excited about. Certainly not someone I'd be excited about having as our coach the year after we got rid of a coach who failed to produce winning teams 6 out of his 9 years here.

Contrast this with Ron Rivera (who I'm behind if we don't by some miracle decide to hire an offensive guy):

League Rank By Pts/G | Yards/g

2004 (Bears) -> 13 | 21

2005 (Bears) -> 1 | 2

2006 (Bears) -> 3 | 5

2008 (Chargers) -> 15 | 25

2009 (Chargers) -> 11 | 16

2010 (Chargers) -> 10 | 1

In red the only times his defenses as a DC were not in the top half of the league. I'm still not excited because as a fan I'm tired of having a defensive HC - but as someone who tries to look at things logically...it seems like Rivera has the better resume, no?

his players were all about him in Oakland. No idea if they'd say much in Cleveland.

I think I'd like Rivera too, I just wonder why he hasn't had a job yet.

As a 25 year Browns fan, who which I am leaving because I can't do it anymore and I am a huge Andrew Luck fan so good chance I am jumping on the Panther Bandwagon. I can give you an evaluation of Rob Ryan.

Ryan had very little talent to work with in Cleveland but when he did get it he was good at developing it. Joe Haden/TJ Ward. Ryan loves to blitz, sometimes to much but in fairness he didn't have a pass rusher in Cleveland. The Browns D gave up a lot of yards but were in the top ten in points allowed. Ryan is a less polished speaker than his brother. Most of his Friday coordinator pressers were edited because of frequent curse words.

Ryan would have to hire an experienced Offensive Coordinator, you don't want him to bring any of the Browns offensive coaches with them if he would come. I don't think Ryan would have much to do with the Panther offense. Ryan is very arrogant but it would make for an interesting coach. Most people in Cleveland love him and want him to return as D coordinator with the new head coach the Browns hire.

Hope that sheds some light, here is to Andrew Luck declaring.

Something to consider here: when the Packers hired Mike McCarthy he was the 49ers O.C. and coming off one of the worst offensive seasons in franchise history (2005). That's worked out well enough for them.

I agree with this.

But, we also have to look at the fact that they got some QB named Aaron Rodgers, whoever that guy is.

no one is saying this. what people ARE saying is that it is really dumb to judge a coach based on where he has coached before (on the browns, which is just a bad situation) without examining his whole body of work but you keep your caveman observation of "browns coaches BAD" without any real insight into why this is

Rob Ryans defenses over the years

2004- 31st

2005- 25th

2006- 18th

2007- 26th

2008- 24th

2009-21st

2010- 13th

He NEVER had a top 10 defense, and only had a TOP 20 defense twice.

here is ron rivera

2004- 13th

2005- 1st

2006- 3rd

2007- linebackers coach for the chargers

2008- 15th

2009- 11th

2010- 10th

i really dont think its up for debate who is a coach. and dont give me RYAN COACHED FOR THE BROWNS DURR poo. why would you choose a coach from a losing organization over a better one from organizations that actually know what they're doing?

Everyone that's calling for Rob to be our coach needs to take a long, hard look at this post.

Hey Hatter, how did RIP work out for us?

hey Dumbass.....I am not saying that Ryan would or would not be a good coach. Only that judging a potential coach by the team that he previously coached for is niave and ridiculous.

This is why I am damn glad that the people on this board have NOTHING to do with making any decision for the Panthers.

Out of the candidates that have been announced, I would prefer Rivera.
