Everette Brown (and Mike Goodson) - Worth the first?

Here is a quick chart (sorted by sacks obviously) comparing Everette Brown's stats vs every DE drafted in the 1st round in the past three years:

EB.png

Keep in mind the only two DE's on the list we could have drafted even if we would have kept our original picks would be Lawrence Jackson and Jerry Hughes. Getting Jackson would mean either no Stewart or no Otah of course. Note Jackson recorded 6 sacks for the Lions. He was originally drafted by the Seahawks.

Another often forgotten point is none of these first round DE's came as a packaged deal with a RB that amassed 762 total yards from scrimmage and 3 TD's.

And to save you the time of looking it up before you post who you were screaming for Hurney to draft, rookie Carlos Dunlap was the best young DE (regardless of round) drafted in the last 3 years sacks wise with 9.5.

So, in short, we'd all like to see Brown produce a bit more (and stay healthy), but he's certainly doing better than average for a 1st rounder.

PS: Orakpo is basically a OLB now, thus the inflated tackle #'s.

The stats are nice, but in reality do you want a first round draft pick to be a situational player who gets on the field for 30% of the defensive plays (in Brown's case- on 3rd downs) or to be a backup (in Goodson's case)?

If I'm using a first rounder on a DE, he better be a starting, full time DE in his second year. Not a situational pass rusher.

If I'm using a first rounder on an RB, he'd better be starting by year 2 as well, not stuck at #3 on the depth chart.

Sorry, I just think in this league and in this age when teams are expected to win now and the prices paid for first and second round draft picks that the players selected in the first 2 rounds need to be starting by their second year, if not their first.

Brown played in 531 snaps before he was injured, which amounted to 57.1% of total snaps he was available for. If he only played on 3rd down then he would be at 33% at best.

He deserved more playing time considering how abused Brayton was...

Picky, picky. I knew someone would bring up the fact he plays DE on the punt D team, that's where some of those other plays come from. I wasn't counting punt plays for obvious reasons. He still is not starting nor is he a full time DE.

Completely and utterly wrong. They are snaps with the defence, not special teams.

    • You bring up a good point on the stability part and i would agree that probably will factor into it. But yes, Tepper does have a strong influence on who stays/goes but I still believe ultimately it'is Morgan, Tilis and Canales who will decide.
    • I can always count on yout to put things so delicately lol. I'm still not sold on the fact that Tepper will make them keep him if they don't see him as a long term answer.
    • holy poo... this thread inspired me to keep trying to guess passwords to various alts I've created over the years and I finally got in! I pretty much accepted my fate as a lurker for the last several months because I could not remember my password. I didn't realize that new users couldn't join either, that explains things. I have been around for years under several different monikers, through the good and bad. I too always find myself coming back here even with all of the new social media options for Panther fan engagement. It's simply nostalgic.   I do get extremely annoyed with the same 5-10 posters shitting on Bryce and complaining about everything. It's unfortunate that half of them are mods and that nobody new can join because now I pretty much just come on here and see Bryce / Panther slander. There is barely any positivity to be had. We all watch this team and hang on this forum for entertainment purposes only. We have no control or say in anything. I used to be such a crazy ass fan that would argue with strangers about Cam newton on the internet and at games. Now, as a father of 3, a business owner and someone with way gnarlier life problems - I like to watch football and talk about football as an escape. Not to bitch more. I really like the direction of the team and will root anyone in a Panthers jersey. I live down the street from the Rams practice facility, Matthew Stafford is currently coaching his daughters flag football team in the same program I coach my sons. I have two highly ranked Rams staff members sons on my team. The way we beat them and had them on the ropes in the playoffs has me feeling amazing, and you would think we have the next great thing in Bryce with the way they all speak of him. I'm gonna ride that high and be a delusional fan, I hope that huddle can stick around or get fixed and perhaps I will get back to posting more now that I can log in again. I will do my best to not get banned. Keep Pounding!
