Ive been hearing the rookie cap wont go into effect till 2012. if no cba is signed and people arent sure about when the rookie cap will be in place nobody in their right mind will be willing to trade to the first pick with such uncertainty.

My guess is they won't go into the draft without some understanding of what to expect in regards to the rookie wage scale and the CBA. If there is confusion I could see them postponing the draft until they have agreed on this.

I could be wrong on this but I can't see either party wanting to hold the draft with such uncertainty.

THIS, and there is too much money tied into it already to postpone the draft...

You're likely gonna have a lockout in March, some kind of deal/arrangement by the draft in April, and then a new CBA by mid to late June... Rookies are likely going to be subject to the lockout as well, and don't typically sign the dotted line until late June/mid July anyways...

totally agree. i see the draft as a catalyst to getting the CBA done. I guess we forget sometimes that the draft is a big money maker for the teams as well. It excites the fanbases and it comes at a time when they start to push for ticket sales for the next season. We might have a new CBA sooner than we think.

Luck NOT coming out really dogged the value of the #1 for Carolina. Most teams know Carolina needs to get a qb.

They also know that Hurney is still the GM and what his tendancies are. I do like the idea of trading down a tad for a dif 1st and maybe another pick OR throw in a solid DL with the trade down and we get help there and still have a high pick.

The challenge now will be getting the proper value for that pick with all the stuff looming.

How does Fairley compare as a prospect to Suh? If there is a Suh type of DT available I think you take, otherwise trade down and get a second rounder.

Fairely can play either the 2 gap nose or the 1 gap NT/UT

he's probably faster than Suh but not enough to offset what a manchild Suh is physically.

Suh is already probably the best DT in the history of the game, so it's hard to compare. Fairley is probably better than McCoy if that means anything.

    • Yep, like I said, I don't mind guaranteeing them money, but make the contracts smaller amounts in order to minimize cap implications. I don't know about "half," the actual amounts, whether more or less than half, would have to be determined by the NFL and NFLPA (which will probably be highly contentious, if not "impossible").  I'm just for whatever leads to the best product on the field while also unaffecting my wallet. As an aside, the NFL owners are greedy bastards in my estimation. They're trying to keep a larger portion of the pie, but players' agents are greedy as well, and they've sewn seeds of greed among the players. It's not all their fault; we all know what our society has evolved into, but the NFL wants a bigger piece of our smaller pocketbooks and refuses to "negotiate" with us (that's why we don't have cheaper and more reasonable à la carte options to view games that they're gradually trying to migrate to paid TV), so fu<k 'em. And then on top of that we have guys trying to water down the product even more by feeding greed. Change the way things are done so that we can at least see players prove themselves on the field without throwing wrenches into the engine that pays guys that have proven they can play on a pro level.
