Why do people keep mentioning JR when it comes to drafting or signing players?

I see it all over the forums. Aren't Ron, assuming he's the guy, and Hurney going to be the main ones deciding on who to sign and who to draft? I assume the main thing Richardson would ever get involved into is how much to pay them, and maybe if there really was exceptional situations that he would be really against, say someone like Michael Vick who is a known felon. I figure JR's involvement in cases like this will be more or less done once the new HC is in place, with the exception of contract and money allocation.

But this isn't the Cowboys folks. I don't see JR micromanaging this team that much, looking into people's college misdemeanor records or whatever other minor negatives a player may have on his resume. That's up to the coach and GM.

seriously though it's because JR for the first time ever highjacked the team so stupid national sportswriters and fans with short memories now think it's going to be this way forever.

Assuming Rivera has more than 3 winning seasons out of 9 JR isn't going to do that again.

You really should read before replying.

I did, and I think you answered your own question.

JR has the final say on everything the Panthers do. This is his team. It's not Ron Rivera's, it's not Marty Hurney's, it's not Danny Morrison's, and it's not his son's.

JR sees this franchise as a business, and any good business runs on a simple system. Can you gain more money than you spend, and can you make good money on your return on investment.

So, if he thinks Player A is wanting too much money, he won't sign them, no matter how bad Rivera or Hurney wants him. Or, if he thinks signing Player B would be a bad idea, because the risk/reward/ROI isn't high enough, then he won't take them.

JR does NOT micromanage the team. Where the heck is everyone getting this? It's always been Hurney and Fox. And now it will be Hurney and Ron.

Money is the only time I see JR getting involved, and like I stated, exceptional situations.

So you're telling me that Hurney just signs players and then he let's JR know after the fact?

Besides, money is what drives the league. So yeah, I'd say JR has his fair share of say in the matter.

Ok I think you miss the point.

You really believe Hurney and the HC would say "ok we need Fairley to fill our DT position" and JR would go," no, I wanna draft an OT"?

Please put down the pipe.

The reason why I would say JR is deciding is because he is rebuilding this franchise in HIS philosophy so I would figure he would have a say so on who we pick. I could be wrong but I am only assuming. I also say that because in the interview from Tuesday didn't he say it was his decision to cut all the vets so the young players would have to play? That would mean he is deciding who comes and goes here.

JR trusts Hurney to do his job. That's why a GM is there.

A number one overall pick, yeah JR may have the final say...but this is Hurney & Ron's roster to build.

JR will NOT be deciding our roster. LOL! It's ridiculous to think that. People need to stop.

And I haven't heard anyone from the club, or media, or inside source make the statement that JR is rebuilding the franchise in HIS philosophy all by himself. All that means is JR will find a coach with a different philosophy similar to what he wants but let him and the GM do their damn jobs.

Jerry Jones is the only owner I know that gets that involved in roster building.

    • Hello, soccer fans [crickets, tumbleweed flies by]. The World Cup kicks off in less than 2 weeks and, well, 🇺🇸USA USA USA🇺🇸 and all. We beat Senegal 3-2 yesterday in a tune-up friendly at BoA, with Christian Pulisic finally entering the scoring column.  How will we do in the World Cup once our tournament kicks off on the 12th? Well, there are 48 teams (assuming Iran is there) and it feels like one of two thing happens: we get grouped for the first time since '98, or we make it to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups. I tried out the lottery for an Atlanta game and struck out, so yesterday was as World Cup as I'll get for in-person ($285/ticket for like Norway vs $39/ticket for USMNT right beforehand was a layup).  The U.S. has a travel-heavy schedule in group play, playing in LA, Seattle and LA. Real road warrior mentality being built. Glad the east coast gets worse kickoff times for a NA World Cup than a Qatar World Cup.
    • Well, that's the thing. Drafting players only for their physical measurables as you are suggesting only really happened during 2024, and X unfortunately has become the poster child for that. To be clear, it's not necessarily about drafting RAS over skill, but RAS over NFL-readiness and/or a solid body of work. Lots of players show skill in college, but those skills don't necessarily translate to the NFL for a multitude of reasons. But, getting back to the main point, to be clear, I believe that our FO is still enamored with physical gifts (who wouldn't be?), but now they're letting Dr. Eric Eager's proprietary system--his "secret sauce" prioritize the players that the Panthers draft, and it seems like it weighs not only a solid body of work, relative to a college career of course, but consistent gradual improvement as evidenced by production pretty highly.
    • Its a good article about how pathetically bad our past drafts ('23 and '24) have been. Building the team in '23 since we weren't ready yet and taking your qb in '24 made so much more sense in hindsight. Ladd McConkey over XL is pretty much a given but not sure it does as much to change Bryce's trajectory as the author suggests.  As bad as '23 and '24 drafts were, the '25 and '26 really give me hope.
