The Pro Clausen Thread....

As others have stated, the kid had nothing to work with. And kid is the best term for him in NFL stature. He turned 23 when the season started, had a terrible O-line that was without their beast of a RT. All of the RB's were hurt at some point this year, two rookie WR's and the best offensive weapon was oft-injured and pouty when he wasn't. Tight ends? Really... come on. His GM/owner gave him no weapons via free agency and his coaching staff was out to lunch and he had minimal leadership getting him acclimated to the NFL speed of the game. Yes, he looked terrible and his release is too low, small hands, etc., but passing judgment on a 2nd round QB (that could've gone late 1st), played in a pro-style offense at a top college program after one season is kinda jumping the gun. I'm not saying he will be Steve Young or Joe Montana, but to ship him out without evaluating him for a couple of seasons is a little brash.

I am hesitant to be PRO Clausen, but I am not ruling out improvement and progression in his play. That said, he had no chance to succeed this year so it's a bit harsh to make any firm judgement on him either way.

Regardless, we should bring in a vet who has impeccible work ethic off the field. If the best thing Jimmy achieves is always being prepared and working hard, the worst we have with him is a great back up.

This is where I stand on the matter as well. Don't be overly critical and accept his faults, but still be willing to accept that he may not be the future if he shows that to be the case.

There are two types of people on this board.

Those who know for sure that Clausen is a bust.

And those with actual football knowledge.

These two traits cannot exist in the same person.

Plain and simple, the jury is still out on Clausen. No one knows what he is capable of within a legit NFL offense and adequate coaching. To pretend otherwise just makes you look like a football ignoramus.

then Moore might be the next Montana using that logic....b/c he actually showed some good play in the 09 season and briefly in 2010. I mean, he never played in a legit offense w/ adequate coaching either overall and has looked significantly better (career wise) than Clausen.

Clausen stinks. Plain and simple. Too early to call him a bust....NOT to early to call him garbage.

good......lord.

that was called sarcasm Mr. Zod. It was applying your logic beyond Clausen and to all QBs. I mean if we don't know how good or bad Clausen is b/c of Foxy.....then how do we know what Moore is. Can't apply that logic to one guy and not the other.

Clausen just flat out stinks. Period. Clausen makes bad QB play look like a decent option.

Clausen = rookie

Moore = 4th year player

Same logic does not apply.

It is hard to imagine a worse rookie QB scenario than the one Clausen stepped into with the 2010 Panthers, that is a big consideration. However, he showed no ability to throw downfield which is alarming.

Now he is looking at season 2 with a new coaching staff, its going to be another long year for Jimmy.

I think people don't understand he was put into a horrible situation and was a rookie during that situation.

Clausen played pretty terrible this year, then again so did pretty much our entire offense for a good portion of the year.

What does Clausen have to improve on:

Throwing Downfield- Captain Checkdown is going to guarantee 3 and outs every time

Working on His 'timer'- Clausen had no clue when the rush was coming

Managing the Clock better- I swear this kid runs the play clock down to within 3 seconds every freaking time

This among other things have to be improved on next year. With Luck not declaring, we have to give Clausen at least another year to develop + sign a veteran qb. Is Clausen a bust? not yet. Do things look good? Hell no

    • Im not angry. Im disappointed. I want to win. Anyone who has watched Bryce play the last 3 years and thinks that this team has in any way seriously addressed the glaring deficiencies in our QB room is deluding themselves. It's been explained ad nauseum how our FO has protected Bryce from feeling even slightly challenged or pressured. A GM without an interfering owner would have brought in another QB to at least give the team a better chance at winning. We just gave an extension to a QB that only got 3k yards on the last play of his 16th game of the year. Indy admitted AR wasn't good enough by bringing in Jones to compete for the starting role. Tennessee drafted Ward to replace Levis. Stroud hasn't repeated his 1st year and Mills' performance was decent when he filled in after Stroud's injury and some were calling for him to remain starter. His future there is still in question even with a 5th year. We should have done the same, especially given that Bryce was benched.  Bringing in Grier is just another glaring billboard pronouncing the obvious. Dave Tepper still has his hands in the daily operations of this team. He controls the QB room because Bryce was his pick. Until Tepper finally admits that Bryce has barely lived up to the standards of a NFL Qb, we're going to spend our days reminiscing of when we were mediocre and finished 9-7.  It's just discouraging. We'll address every position on the field except the one with a glaringly obvious shortcoming. I had hoped Tepper really had backed off. Bryce's 5th year, Dalton's 2 year contract then trade, Kenny Pickett, Will Grier, Jack Plummer, and  Hendon Hooker say otherwise. It already feels like it's going to be a hard year of Panthers football to watch.
