Meeks in; Skipper out

Former defensive coordinator Ron Meeks confirmed that he had talked to new coach Ron Rivera about a position on his staff but would not specify which one.

However, two league sources said Meeks was talking about the secondary coach job, instead of anything with play-calling responsibility. Rivera said during his introductory news conference that he planned to take a hands-on role in conducting the defense.

Running backs coach Jim Skipper said he and Fox had spoken Friday afternoon, and he indicated he'll head west soon.

"It looks like I'm going to get there in some capacity," Skipper said. "Don't know exactly what it's going to be, but he did say he wanted to bring me out there."

Skipper's running backs were among the most consistent position groups the Panthers had, and all of his players had been lobbying for his return. But Skipper said he never heard from general manager Marty Hurney.

nooo Skipper :(

hahaha, anyone else remember all the "Why not Meeks for HC?!" posts? He's taking a downgrade to stay here....? Weird... Wonder if Fox didn't like him much

Secondary fine, don't want play calling or defensive style responsibilities in his brief case.

DWILL for #36 overall GET IT DONE NOW

Not possible. DWill is a Free Agent and not our property. Franchise Tag him you say? Didn't work out too well with Pepeprs, no guarantee he signs the FT contract. If he does then you could trade him but he won't bring compensation along the lines Matt Cassell brought to the Patriots (2nd round) as a QB has more value than RB. Or we FT him and have to pay him close to 8 million for one year if the FT numbers are similar to last year with no trade. Better to use that FT tag on someone like Kalil, moving his next contract off a year.

The other side of the lockout...coaches will take a lower position for a guaranteed paycheck.

Good point.

    • Hey, I was against drafting him back when, but you can't go back and undo it. So... you move on and hope there really is something developing there. Someone with more knowledge of the situation (whose job relies on it) seems to have more than hope than we do. So... once again, we trod into the coming season with Bryce and a lot of expectations. Like I said, the extension wasn't offered for past performance, it's a hedge against something great happening. If something mediocre happens, it also gives us something tradeable. If something bad happens, then we aren't on the hook for much more and we wade back into the rookie pool.
    • Upon further review, you are correct.  I was thinking they were Hurney guys.
    • Yea he offered and was told the number wouldn't be high enough. Jeremy keeps paying the bill. Maybe he makes money off the site or maybe he's still attached
