Will Carolina bring in competetion at QB?

Matt Moores contract is up and Clausen finished last with the lowest QB rating in the NFL.I have read where many of you do not feel we will bring in FAs which aligns with JRs remarks and others feel Clausen needs time to develope.

So my question is what can we do? or what will we do?

One choice is status quo....another is to bring in some old fart like Roodey Peete that wants to sit on the sideline and "mentor"Clausen and Pike.

Or does JR reach into a piggy bank and sign a veteran that will compete for the job?

I guess another choice would be dig deep in the piggy bank and go after a proven starter?

not many "proven starters" end up in FA... not that aren't real old or otherwise, anyway.

we've gotta bring in others, especially if the Observer is right and we're not bringing Moore back. Who, though? Dunno. Lots of people around here have said Volek because of his Charger ties.

Other popular names are McNabb, who may get cut (havent been keeping up with him), Orton (trade potential) and Kolb (trade potential.

Just my 2 cents on the QB front, why would Denver think that getting rid of Orton is a good idea? Same thing in Philly with Kolb and in Washington with McNabb...considering that the free-agent market for QB's ain't all that impressive, why would any team ditch a quality backup/ potential starter without a replacement plan? Those are the three I would think could walk right into the starting QB role here, but aren't easily available. I'm thinking Volek at this point....and I like that option considering the alternatives.

I think it's pretty much a given that there will be competition. Don't expect big names or high draft picks, though.

You could see Matt Moore back and maybe a mid-level veteran like Billy Volek.

This seems like the most probable scenario. Clausen, Moore, Pike and Volek as roster QB's until the cuts. Boiling down to Volek, Clausen and Pike on the final roster unless Matt More shows a 180 turnaround. Only wildcard would involve a QB trade with another team that ships Pike or Clausen somewhere for a fresh start in return for another QB.

I will hear for alot of crap for this but here goes......What if we could get Vince Young on a cheap short term contract kind of like Vick did.The upside is huge if he can get his poo together and the downside is we cut him.and take a small hit.

The guy has an arm and if he will grow up could be a decent QB.He did win some games when he is in Tenn.

I am sorry but I do not see Volek as competetion just more of the same.

We don't need nor want a dual threat QB like young esp with his attitude problems. Young will go to an established playoff type team where he will be used in certain situations like Vick was till this year. He is not for a team rebuilding.

That said, we need a veteran to come in and get this thing going again while we figure out what we will do future wise with QB. I for one am willing to part with a pick if we can trade down and get some more of them, for Kolb.

Volek wouldn't be a bad choice but at 35 might be injury prone although he has light mileage being a career backup. He could be a Steve Beuerliein for us. Still I would like a guy still in his twenties who could be the starter for a few years, perhaps the next Delhomme.

Delhomme came out of no where. Who is most like him back in 03 and might be available.

    • https://www.yahoo.com/sports/article/versatile-2nd-db-named-panthers-154026075.html Smith-Wade's ability to play corner, nickel and safety makes him valuable to a young defense trying to rebuild after finishing last in the NFL a year ago. "Chau took advantage of an opportunity,'' coach Dave Canales said. "He made tackles. He had an opportunity on an interception, and he made it.'' Our defense has got to come alive for us to have a chance of winning our Division!
    • lol, that second part is quite literally one of the dumbest things ever. Having or not having guaranteed contracts has absolutely nothing to do with how much these billionaires have to pay.  Because there is a hard cap and a minimum cap spend requirement, and teams either use their cap or roll it over to use it all the next year, so the owners have to pay the same amount of money in the end no matter what. Having fully guaranteed contracts in the NFL would only hurt salary cap management, and thus would end up screwing over the team and its fan base when teams kiss on signings as they take up cap room that is needed to improve the roster. Look at the Browns with Watson, they gave him the fully guaranteed deal and all it’s doing is sucking up massive cap space now.  If they hadn’t done that, the owner would still be paying the same amount of money each year as that cap space would still be used elsewhere. If you want to argue for fully guaranteed contracts because the players deserve it, that’s an entirely different argument and a fair one to discuss.  But anyone against fully guaranteed deals isn’t doing it to argue for the billionaire owners.
