McNabb placing blame?

From PFT: McNabb slights Eagles defense

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb took a not so thinly-veiled shot at his defensive teammates, pinning blame on them for the NFC title game loss to the Arizona Cardinals, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

During a WIP radio interview, McNabb’s response to a question about why the Eagles couldn’t respond offensively after the Cardinals’ touchdown in the final minutes suggested that the defense was at fault for squandering a slight lead.

“We were up, 25-24,” McNabb said, per the Inquirer. “We were up, 25-24. [The Cardinals] drove down 72 yards by running the ball — probably, what, eight times? And it reminded me so much of [the NFC championship game in] St. Louis where, coming back in that second half, they ran the ball nine times with Marshall Faulk to keep our offense off the field. Because they were terrified of us going back out and scoring more points.”

The story goes on to say former Eagles defender Hugh Douglas took offense.

“I know Donovan. I respect Donovan. In his mind, he didn’t say anything wrong. But a leader thinks before he speaks. That would never come out of a leader’s mouth. Every year, Donovan says something that’s inflammatory, then he doesn’t explain himself. Explain yourself. When you alienate people who have your back, I need to understand why. I need to understand how he thinks. Right now, I don’t.”

Hasn't gotten much play nationally, but I wonder if there's been much reaction in Philly.

Florio states in a separate article that some "insiders" believe McNabb is trying to "talk his way out of town". As always, this kind of talk is highly speculative.

And he said less than two weeks ago that he wants to retire as an Eagle... lol

Hugh Douglas hits the nail on the head with his statement.

Word is McNabb has never been the favorite person in that locker room, in fact he is very much disliked by some teamates. McNabb is not the leader of that team, Brian Dawkins is. I hate when McNabb opens his mouth like that whether it is true or not what he says. What do you have to gain by saying that?

Regardless, I still want him as the Eagles QB next year and believe he will be. I am not ready for the Kolb era to begin.

That's not the first time I've heard that sort of criticism.

And now...this.

Eagles | McNabb wants financial apology

Jason Cole, of Yahoo! Sports, reports Philadelphia Eagles QB Donovan McNabb remains upset over his benching this past season and he, along with agent Fletcher Smith, want the team to come through with a financial commitment to him. McNabb has two years remaining on his contract. If there's no meeting of the minds, McNabb will likely skip the team's offseason program.

That's from KFFL. It took some time, but I found the story it's pulled from here: link

Here's the blurb.

7. McNabb wants a financial apology. After being benched briefly in November and then coming back to lead the Eagles to a the NFC Championship game, McNabb and agent Fletcher Smith want Philadelphia to come through with a financial commitment to him. McNabb, 32, has two years remaining on his contract, which complicates things for Philadelphia.

If there’s no meeting of the minds, expect that McNabb will skip the offseason program. That won’t be popular in Philadelphia, but McNabb hasn’t ever really been all that popular with the fans anyway. The way he and Smith likely see it, what is there to lose?

Not exactly "fence mending" here.

"Financial commitment" doesn't necessarily equate to "contract extension". It's a reasonable assessment, but it doesn't actually say that.

Regardless, threatening to skip offseason workouts without a "financial commitment" isn't something I generally take a positive view of when it's done by any player.

And if he's playing the "you owe me because you benched me" card, that's just whiny.

Hey Jason Cole reported it so it must be true. Just like if he reported the Panthers plan to release Jake Delhomme this offseason Im sure you would take it as gospel also.

    • Per Bill Barnwell  Broncos part ways with a CB on the roster bubble Broncos get: 2026 seventh-round pick Panthers get: CB Damarri Mathis The Broncos have a rare problem among NFL teams: too many cornerbacks. ESPN's Jeff Legwold projects they could move on from Mathis, who was very good as a rookie in 2022 before losing his starting job after the defense's slow start in 2023. He played just 27 defensive snaps after Week 6 that season and 80 more across 10 games in 2024. With the Broncos using their 2025 first-round pick on cornerback Jahdae Barron, they could justify moving on from Mathis, who might not be active on game days even if he sticks around. Mathis' best season came with defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero in Denver, and he hasn't been able to reach those same heights since Evero left for Carolina. The Panthers are set with Jaycee Horn, Mike Jackson and nickel corner Chau Smith-Wade as their three starting corners, but Mathis could push the 28-year-old Jackson and serve as Carolina's primary reserve on the outside. Mathis is owed $3.4 million in 2025, so Denver might essentially buy a draft pick by eating some of that cash, similar to what the Commanders did when they sent running back Brian Robinson Jr. to the 49ers.
    • They can get fuged for a 6th and 7th. Doesn't make sense for us for anything less than a 4th and them paying a majority of his salary.
