Gross wants more money than Jake Long

Just saw it on NFL network. Evidentely, Gross has been talking with other players around the Pro Bowl, namely Clinton Portis. And Clinton (half jokingly), said that Gross wants to get more money than Jake Long. So Jordan Gross saying that the issue is not about money, well he is lying, to put it simply.

Jake Long's contract:

Signed a five-year, $57.75 million contract. The deal includes $30 million guaranteed. Year six voided based on rookie-year playing time (Long started all 16 games). 2009: $3.75 million, 2010: $4.5 million, 2011: $5.25 million, 2012: $6 million, 2013: $6.75 million (Voided Year), 2014: Free Agent

In my opinion, Gross is worth it. Give the man his money.

I would take that contract. I was thinking he was going to get something around 60 million total anyway. Hate that half of it is guaranteed but if anyone can earn it, he can. The guy rarely misses anytime on the field.

just saw that video myself. im pretty sure everything that was said there was a joke. i wouldnt take nething coming from clinton portis seriously..he also said boldin was gonna be playing for the skins next year and jon beason took over the interview and said it was his show

I still believe the reason he didn't sign last year had nothing to do with money. The Panthers will give him a contract more than what Long got no question. I also believe Gross when he says he wants to stay in Carolina.

I suspect that Hurney would pay what he wants. The issue may be the signing bonus which is guaranteed money and how much is loaded toward the back of the contract which many players never see. GMs try to make as much money as possible part of the yearly salary or roster bonuses that are paid out a few years down the road but aren't guaranteed up front. Players want as much as possible up front which is guaranteed no matter how well or poor they perform.

As for voiding a year at the end, it probably isn't an issue. With rookies it is a concern because they expect to get a big payday after their rookie contract is over. Saving an extra year could mean more dollars quicker. For a guy like Gross it is likely that this is the big payday and most guys don't play longer than 10 -12 years in the league. So he wouldn't worry about hitting the free agent market sooner to get another big payday.

IMO nobody deserves an opt out clause. Isn't the purpose of a contract to have a binding agreement with someone. If we are offering a player 60 million bucks hopefully something like an opt out isn't keeping him from signing it. What is he going to do? Go sign with another team when he is 33, old, and getting ready to make the most money of his contract?

When Gross stated it wasn't about the money I assumed it meant that Hurney had offered him plenty. Hurney doesn't lowball players that deserve to get paid.

They ALL say it's not about the money but the Panthers have got to find a way to keep Gross; they cannot afford to lose their best defensive AND offensive linemen in the same year :eek:

5 year, 60 million, the Panthers really have no choice or Pep will walk without compensation to the Panthers. Hurney stepped on his dick not getting Gross signed earlier.

All just depends how the money works on the cap and what the hit will be in years 4 or 5.

Every bit of that video and 'interview' from Clinton was a big joke. Did you not watch all of the other people Clinton was talking to? He went to several players, and after he got done talking about it, he said "this man demands to be the highest paid (insert playing position) in the NFL." He also said that Anquan Boldin, and Jordan Gross are going to be in Washington playing for the Redskins next year, in the same joking manner. Should you make a thread about that and talk about how Gross already has his bags packed and is on his way to Washington?

You can't believe anything that was said during what you watched. It's the Pro Bowl, a type of vacation for the players, and they're all just goofin' around, making jokes. That's all there was to it.

Not necessarily. It could be more so his agent getting greedy and Jordan could just be going along because he doesn't know any better. I'm sure Jordan probably doesn't understand the contracts like a sports agent does.
