Franchise Tag questions, #1 pick options

Says that we called to get info on the Newton's workout. I wonder if they are honestly considering him, or if it's just a smokescreen. Even if he turns in an amazing combine, does this guy really stand a chance at going #1 overall?

I'm not worried about it, to be honest with you, though. I doubt we take him #1, but even if Hurney did truly feel like he was worth it, I think I'd just trust his judgement and get behind the pick immediately. There's a slight chance that he knows more about NFL potential than I do.

I say "yes" Cam really does stand a chance at going #1 overall. This is a draft with no clear top pick, there are multiple teams in the top 10 who also need a QB and would most likely pick him, and the Panthers are in desperate need at QB and if Hurney and Co. think he can be a franchise guy they wont mess around with trading down and risk not getting him.

So I say Cam can easily end up going #1 and like you I will trust the people actually making the decision. I do think they are looking at Cam for real, and of course should it never hurts to make other teams think you want him should you decide to trade down.

I agree with everything you said. The bottom line is that this is a weird draft. The #1 pick is really equal to #10. You can't really 'reach' on anyone because there are no stand out players. But, Cam Newton is the biggest name in the draft, and arguably the player with the most potential. He should be the #1 pick.

with first round picks he has proven to be as solid as they come. many will scream and cuss, just like i did when we drafted clausen last year, but they will get on board.

agreed, no smoke screen with this. there is and should be genuine interest, esp. for a team who has such a rotten QB corps.

I have nothing against Cam and i feel like if he can get in the right offense and get some real good people around him he could be a pretty good QB.Just think about it, you are not going to never have a good playoff contending team every year into you get an above standard QB.Mostly all the teams that was in the playoffs this year and some past years have real pretty good QB play. The panthers better really think long and hard about this. If i was in this situation I probably would pull the trigger on Cam newton..Why ? Because if everything works out he could be a top 10 QB in the NFL hands down. But if it dont ,well we didnt have anything to lose anyway.

This is my thinking. If we take him, and he meets his full potential, then that's a homerun. If we take him and he busts, but Jimmy meets his potential, then that's still good on our part. If we take him and Cam and Jimmy both bust, then we are right where we are now.

Plus, if Cam busts, then we own the first pick in next years draft where we can A) draft Luck if we are ready to give up on Cam, or B) we absolutely rape the poo out of some team that wants to trade up and select Luck.

    • Been here since middle school right when it started around 2003 after the charlotte.com one. Living outside of Carolina it was tough to find good Panthers content, news or analysis. And no one to talk to about it. This place gave me a lot though I don’t often post. In the later days, I particularly Loved PhillyB’s write ups. They were fire. Too bad I go let it go. I appreciate the hell out of @MHS831 @TheSpecialJuan @Jackie Lee and others who have been posting great content and keeping this place worth coming back to. Particularly during the offseason. Appreciate y’all!
    • Nice explanation, but I was just messing with you. Thought that would be obvious. I dont have the energy to keep on trolling. Last season I compared our situation with Bryce as a potential Alex Smith, but what we should be looking for is our version of Mahomes. Some people will read that as one sentence, to me that single sentence is equivalent to a half A4 explanationf of the teams pathway forward.
    • I dont know how much of his salary would come across and how much a trade would cost but I feel Kmet would be the sort of TE Canales and Morgan would like
