Raiders might not franchise Zach Miller

Per Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune (reported in Rotworld).

Wednesday's Richard Seymour extension opened up this possibility, but McDonald is "not sure the Raiders are eager to pay (Miller) $7.3 million." They'd certainly have a bigger budget if they hadn't overpaid Seymour. McDonald suggests that Miller could wind up with a restricted free agent tender, costing less than half of the franchise number for tight ends.

Rivera would certainly know him well from his AFC West days.

If the CBA leaves him a restricted free agent though, they could still put a high tender offer on him :(

i would easily take miller or marcedes lewis over anyone we have on the roster or any who would be available in the draft.

raiders would be making a mistake to not franchise him. he mightget taken up quick, esp. if they only use the 2nd round tender on him. probably will be the first and 3rd or just the first, though. that might be harder to justify.

Franchise tag offer for TEs is one year, 7.3 million.

Doubt we'd offer him that much of an annual salary, but it'd be a longer term offer with a better organization.

My question is this, what are they(our FO) willing to part with since we know, and rightfully so, that the philosophy is to build thru the draft? I don't know that I expect any "marquee" FA pick up.

As a side note, new coach Hue Jackson wants to return to the days when the Raiders were perceived as the villains of the NFL.

Miller would be a force, but at what cost? You could get a guy like Kevin Boss for less money and still have a pretty good tightend combo with Barnidge.

Nothing I've heard Rivera say makes it sound like he has any interest in a "tight end combo".

yeah but barnidge is still on the team so that makes it a 1 (Free agent) starter 2 backup (Barnidge) combo. Its not like the new guy will play every down.

Read an interview with him before his draft where he said he'd love to play for Carolina. Maybe that's still true.

if hes an RFA will still probably won't be able to have him. They prob wont but a 1st on him, and we don't have a 2nd.
