How many picks...

I have noticed a trend lately of a lot of people on this board thinking that we need as many draft picks as possible. I wander if some of you realize that if we draft 8-10 players that we will be removing the same amount of people from our current roster.

We have a lot of young guys that gained invaluable playing experience last year. So the thought process here is to replace them with younger guys with no playing time?

And to Trade SS for what? A 4th round pick. We have a terrible record for drafting WRs. What is the bust percentage for 4th round WRs? Im guessing around 60-80% So we essentially replace our #1 WR for a guy that will probably not even be in the league in 2 years.

The roster is only so big. So what 10 guys off our current roster would all of you like to dump for unproven rookies? Personally I can only think of 5 or 6. We don't need 20 draft picks and definitely not at the cost of guys that have proven they can play at the highest level in the NFL like SS or D Will.

39 players are under contract.

Smith's value, at 32, is not that high. The only reason we would trade him is out of necessity (he wants a trade and/or his attitude is deemed toxic by the coach). You would never replace him for what you would get.

As for accumlating picks, it gives you a lot of toys to maneuver around during the draft. I get 12 picks, for example, and I can wheel and deal to get 5 in the top 2 rounds.

    • I mean, I think you're being a little hyperbolic with the last statement, but point taken.
    • Pass rush was the biggest issue in tonight’s game, and we were tied for 28th in sacks this season. That is a major area of need that has to get addressed this offseason. I just don’t see a path where there’s a game changing QB you can bring in with where we are drafting and quality of veterans that will be available. We certainly can do better than Dalton as a backup, and should ideally have a developmental guy  (perhaps a day 3 pick this year). We have bryce for one more year on a reasonable contract and then I think 2027 is the year that you reset that position (unless he massively improves).
    • Agreed, honestly basically bringing this group back as a healthy unit would be alright.  Brady Christensen should be resigned to a very reasonable deal with him recovering from the Achilles.  Atleast we're alright at 4 of our 5 spots with Lewis, Mays, Hunt, and Moton, Nijman was decent.  While if we can snag a deal on someone, take a stab, however our resources need to go to Linebacker, Pass Rush and a real option outside Tmac (coker is amazing, but if we can get someone who isnt braindead opposite Tmac, we can fully unleash Coker AND Tmacs full potential, cant move him into the slot if racoon boy is out there licking doorknobs).
