WELLINGTON, New Zealand —

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake has rocked the southern New Zealand city of Christchurch.

There was no immediate confirmation of injuries or damage to the city from the quake.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the temblor was centered 3 miles (5 kilometers) from the city at a depth of 2.5 miles (4 kilometers).

The earth is sure pissed off or something...maybe its the result of a polar shift? Chile had a 6.8 earthquake earlier this month, as well as Peru with a 5.3. Pakistan suffered a 7.3 last month, not to mention Japan's Shinmoedake volcano was erupting at the end of last month/beginning of this month.

Apparently in the last 7 days there have been 220 earthquakes worldwide.

Is this normal??

Yeah normal

How often do earthquakes occur?

To most people's surprise, significant worldwide earthquake activity happens at a phenomenal rate. The number of worldwide earthquakes registering M4.0 or stronger ranges between 100 - 500 events per week; activity in the M5+ range happens between 5 - 70 times per week; and it is unusual when a M6+ quake does not happen somewhere on the planet during a week.

So far 65 confirmed dead although they expect that to rise. The quake itself was smaller than the one that hit Christchurch last September but this one was more shallower and closer to the city center. Also unlike the last quake this one struck during the lunch period.

It's been a surreal afternoon/evening around here I can tell you

Of course it's normal.

Why does there always have to be an explanation?

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand -- The earthquake that struck Christchurch has caused some 30 million tons of ice to break off from New Zealand's biggest glacier.

Tour guides at the Tasman Glacier in the Southern Alps say the quake caused the ice to "calve" from the glacier, forming icebergs in the terminal lake.

Tourists of Glacier Explorer boats say the icefall caused waves of up to 3.5 meters in height which swept up and down the lake for 30 minutes.

yikes!

The Krakatau Volcano in Indonesia started erupting this year too. Between these global weather anomolies, and the thousands of dead fish, birds, dolphins, whales, bees, something must be up. This isnt normal. It's practically 80 degrees today in Charlotte, while 6 hours north of us in DC, theyre getting snow. This time of the year is normally the coldest for us. This is very strange.

    • I honestly can’t believe this team’s turnaround this season. It’s surreal. Figured healthy we’d be fringe playoffs and with another lottery pick could finally turn the corner, but we don’t even need that. This group is ready. We haven’t played remotely well the last 5 games and yet still blew out 5 bad teams by 16+ each game like it was casual practice. We had a few solid teams with Kemba and Big Al but this is easily our best group since the original Hornets moved to NO. Man, what a shift in culture this new ownership group and front office has brought. So damn happy to see it after years of suffering and consistently meaningless games in this stretch of previous seasons.   Only 2.5 games out of the 6 seed, although Miami, Atlanta and Orlando have been playing well too. Gonna be a fun final stretch, hopefully we can get a top 8 seed at the very least. Celtics tomorrow will be a good test. Would be huge to keep the road winning streak up against a very hot top team on the 2nd half of a back to back. We’ve played Boston pretty well the last few years with much of this same group despite sucking so I do feel pretty good about it. Kon is due for a huge game coming off a few cold shooting games (although despite the poor shooting he’s been contributing well with defense, assists and rebounds).
    • It amazes me how underrated Horn has become after he finally was able to stay on the field. Sure last year wasn’t perfect but he was still a huge reason for our rebound defensively and I’d say he’s easily a top 10 corner. You don’t want to see Mike Jackson as our top corner. Any player is available for the right price but I’d be extremely hesitant to move Horn even for a big haul from LA.
