It's December 12th, 2024.

You have $10MM, you have to hire a coach, then you can divvy up the rest of the money in NIL.

Who do you hire and what players would you have gotten in the portal with what's leftover?

You're struggling to hire a coach for $10m.

Will address each comment separately ...

"5 Year Hole": If that happens, it's no different than where we were anyways when Mack refused to retire 2-3 years ago.  BB may not work out, but at least the administration swung for the fences.  Who else would you have hired in mid December last year?  Think about how bad our talent is now, and then multiply that by 10 with what some low level assistant we plucked from wherever would've been able to bring in with no time and no budget.

"Sticking Around / Son as HC": I have to imagine if BB quits before any success, that wouldn't bode well for his son sticking around.  The fan base, alumni and administration aren't going to want to be reminded every Saturday when we are getting beat by William & Mary that there is a Belichick on the sideline.

"Pivot": In my opinion, there are only two pivots to make if Belichick doesn't work.  1) Dump a truckload into football NIL, although not sure that's even feasible or 2) Take all that football NIL, dump it into being a dominant basketball school again, and relevant in football once every ten years with the luck of getting a Howell or Maye who are in state Tarheel kids.

IMO, UNC fans will be lusting after the Mack Brown 2.0 era after what BB likely does to them. The results are already in that vein.

UNC has spent wildly on basketball and recruits for decades. More money is just "inflation" to an extent but I don't think a massive amount of cash is going to cure their ails. They have to get over this "UNC Family" sickness with basketball coaching hires and just simply hire the best candidates available. IMO, that really fixes the "problems" with the basketball side of things.

Another sad truth that UNC fans I don't think have accepted is that it would take tremendously more money than they currently invest to become a relevant football school(something they have literally never been for any period of time). Not just money but the proper architecture. Ask Texass how that worked in the post Mack Brown era. Given the reported internal schism that led to the BB hiring(and current/future fiasco) this sounds very much like that fraught era of Texass football.

That was my point.  @LinvilleGorge was acting like there was some magic hire or recruit the administration or Belichick missed.

Unreal how much coaches leading awful programs are making.  Cal, Va Tech, Houston, Maryland, Virginia and many others are paying their coaches $5M+ a year.

You're just failing to cope with how atrocious this roster looks. How many players do we have that would be starting or getting significant PT on most other power conference teams? Hell, Jordan Shipp might be the whole list. And it's not because the cupboard was left bare. Belichick and crew used the portal to completely reshape the roster in their vision and much like his moves as GM with the Pats the result is trash.

Noone is arguing with you that the roster is awful, but ....

You still haven't answered the question....

With $10M who would you have hired and what recruits would you have brought in?  Until you show some other plan that would've led to 9 or 10 wins, stop bitching.

Not someone who is 73 years old and who had never coached college football. I wanted Mack Brown gone because the game had passed him by and we fire him to hire someone the same age. Not a QB who barely did anything at South Alabama.

You keep speaking in generalities when I'm asking you for specifics.

What Nick Saban-esque coach, and Jayden Daniels-esque transfer did this team miss on?

We suck, but you can't point to Belichick being a failure (yet) as to the reason we suck.  If anything, Mack Brown waiting 3 years too long to retire and then the administration not running his sorry ass out of town after James Madison last year are WAY further to blame for where we are than Belichick.

Belichick might turn out to be a terrible hire, but there is ZERO way to know that given the hand he was dealt at the timing it was dealt.

He's 73. This wasn't a long-term hire. This was a huge splash hire and the huge splash was the massive poo landing in the toilet.

I also don’t think UNC really got the actual Bill that was advertised either when the original thing was brainstormed

UNC has this odd late in life crisis Bill.  Really weird distraction girl stuff that really runs counter to some of the most basic Belichick principles.   They have tried to quiet it some bit home girl is still getting her shine interacting with Bill on the sideline.  Bill also seems caught up still with NFL drama banning New England scouts lol.

It's a complete clown show and an embarrassment for everyone all the way around.

Again, who would you have hired and recruited.  Revisionist history is for cowards.

I don't know. I'm pretty sure I said I bowed out of this one because we got the guy I wanted in Fedora and that crashed and burned so I didn't have a horse in this race but I said all along I didn't want Belichick.

You're acting like UNC just didn't have the resources and that's absolute hogwash. We didn't just have to pony up to pay Belichick, we had to make NIL commitments to football as part of the deal. Belichick is one of the top 10 highest paid coaches in college football. It wasn't a lack of resources problem. They just got sold on this idea of making a massive splash hiring one of the greatest NFL coaches of all time and it looks like Seifert at the Panthers all over again.

Seifert is a good comp. Billed as "The Guy" and then it turns out he's an over the hill product of a greater machine that was successful.

Which, not to say BB doesn't deserve a chunk of his NFL accolades.

The face saving measure is pulling the rip cord as soon as feasible. Make the media story how bad he was as a coach and not how bad the hiring decision overall was.

OK.  Done arguing with you.

You're upset Belichick was hired but have no reco on who the better hire would've been.

You're upset the roster sucks but have no reco on who the better recruits would've been.

You're the guy who gets in an uber, tells the driver he's going the wrong way, and then the driver asks "which way should I go" and you reply "I don't know, just not this way".

    • So he became GM and decided not to address the weakness in the QB room following one of the worst rookie QB performances in NFL history?  There were options last season other than signing Dalton to a 2 year deal. Brissett and Jones by a wide margin, both of whom outplayed Bryce, Wilson, Winston, hell even Rivers off the couch was more exciting at the QB position. The time to address the failure in the QB room was last year but instead people on the Huddle cheered when we brought Dalton back then cheered when we were able to get anything for him after they finally realized he was washed up like a few of had been saying all along and got poo'd for even mentioning.  This year, the options were more limited obviously, especially since we lost Icky. It changed the dynamic of our draft. I think we were stuck this year keeping Bryce, but i still think giving him a 5th year option for what has amounted to replacement worthy performance was the wrong move. Why guarantee 25m if you're planning to replace him? You think he's going to want to be a bridge QB? Hell no. He's going to want out and we'll end up cutting him if he has another lackluster season because no one is trading for him with that price tag.  Were there better options as far as production available. A couple. Were there guys available with more physical tools than Bryce, Pickett or Grier, you damn well better believe there were. I've been saying all along, you always keep looking for your 1b. Bryce has yet to prove he can be a starter. Keep looking for someone who may. Put competition in camp. Let the best QB lead the team. Stop settling for less than mediocre.
    • Reasonable. I mean I didn’t see a clear path to relief this season myself. As I have typed already, I think the QB FA class is more interesting next season and that draft is supposed to be stacked as well. There just weren’t many options this year.  When you have Tepper to contend with you have to tread lightly around this unless you are 100% certain and willIng to stake your job on it.   There were a couple of outings that helped Bryce a lot in terms of  thinking maybe he can do this, and if you are a supporter you are giving them a lot of weight. You are likely to think just get him some more help and he can do that every week. Which I think Tepper falls into that category.  And the playoffs, division champs, regardless of the way I see that, the supporters will also give that a lot of weight.    And the big one, the atmosphere In BOA for that WC game, Tepper had to be soiling himself over that. If you pulled Bryce out right now you had better be right and your new guy had better make the playoffs and look good doing it or you will be gone and your chance to build your old team back into respectability will be gone too.  So here we have Pickett on a one year deal, and Grier and King. I understand it.
