Pat Y on why Shockey wont come here (Steve Smith RIP)

I read thisPAT Y Article that pretty much says Shockey won't come to Carolina because of the Drama it will bring between Smith and Shockey.

I never liked Shockey but I believe he would be an upgrade over our current TEs and when he is healthy he can play well. Our current offensive coordinator will be able to get the most out of him on the field. The only problem is we know how he treated Eli Manning and after Shockey left Manning became a star QB. As much of an upgrade he would be I don't think Shockey would benefit our team unless his attitude changed. Shockey plays better with vet QBs that he cant bully around, put him on our team with young QBs and we could have a locker room disaster.

I was surprised to see how much Pat Y rips on Smith

The season he and equally flamboyant Keyshawn Johnson were together was a disaster on and off the field. In the locker room, Smith shot dirty looks at reporters when they talked to Johnson, and it also worked in reverse. When Smith was paired with young receivers like Dwayne Jarrett and Keary Colbert, he walked all over them and was probably part of the reason they were busts.

I never really heard about Smith being the reason why our young receivers never developed but now that I think about it maybe he has been the problem on offense. For years our passing game revolved around him and no other receiver besides Moose ever had a good year while playing here. I never hated Smith but after watching him drop so many easy passes in almost every game and blame Clausen for it I couldn't help but start thinking that Smith is becoming a problem.

In the past he has got into 2 fights with team mates which is wrong but since he was our star player everyone over looked it and took his side instead of Lucas who was the victim. Now that he isn't the dominate player he once was why not trade his complaining ass for some late picks in the draft? We are a young team and we have 2 great WRs that are developing and possibly a good QB but his mouth might cause some locker room problems we don't need.

Rivera seems like the kind of guy that isn't going to tolerate bullshit from anyone, so I'm not much worried about Smith getting along with Shockey... Plus Smith might respect us having another target now that he's getting up there in age.

Smith being completely uninterested in mentoring younger players has been common knowledge for years now.

Guy's a jerk, but he's talented as he'll, and he's our jerk.

He really is. Having met him a few times. I watched a few OTAs and he was all over Dwayne Jarrett. Fox loves Smith, w/ good reason.

Smith's best (and perhaps only) friend on the team was Kasay. They spent a lot of time together. I found that to be odd.

Explain the success of Gettis and LaFell.

Theory: Who knows? Perhaps it was because he was preoccupied with Clausen. Jake had a way with Smith. He got him the ball. I think Lafell and Gettis are a lot like Colbert and Carter, just better players.

Jarrett used to line up wrong. Smith works hard at practice and doesn't play around. KJ was all about himself. Smith is a jerk, but he is a team player. He wants everyone to have his intensiity.

I never overlooked it. Though I always got a kick out of the hypocrisy whenever people would say "Now he has changed.".

Explain the success of Gettis and LaFell.

Colbert had a great rookie season and look what happened to him. Gettis and LaFell did have a decent season but not a great season. I consider them to have a great season considering the QB fiasco and how we are a run first team but just because they had a decent rookie season doesn't mean they are guaranteed to have a successful NFL career.

Also remember how Smith acted on the sidelines? Maybe one reason why he was so pissed is because we was giving the rookies more passes than him.

Jarrett was a bust, I hate to say it because I was one of those people who never gave up on him until this year but maybe the reason why Jarrett never amounted to anything was because of Smith? I'm not saying that its a fact but its quite a possibility.

I just found an interesting stat on LaFell and Smith

Smith was tied for 2nd in the NFC for most passes dropped (8) while LaFell had 7, this is really bad considering that Smith was only targeted 99 times. It is really disappointing to see LaFell with that many dropped passes but to his defense he had most of those in the beginning of the season and he did improve dramatically.

I've personally watched Steve interact with both LaFell and Gettis at practice and it seems very friendly.

I think the trick with Smith is that you have to prove to him that you want it as bad as he does... if you do you're in but if you don't he'll treat you like a piece of crap. He was irritated at Jarrett because Jarrett was doing interviews while he was screwing up plays in practice, Smith felt like Jarrett hadn't earned the right to do interviews yet.

Not sure about Colbert but it's not hard for me to imagine he had the same work ethic issues as Jarrett. The thing we Keyshawn could have been on a whole other level, Keyshawn isn't exactly the easiest person to get along with...

Bull. It was up to Colbert and Jarrett to produce on the field and they didn't. Steve Smith remains a Carolina Panther legend.
