This isn't a "Should we draft Cam Newton thread". I haven't taken part in the debate thank God and I just want to know what the consensus is on him so far.

Any speculation at this point would be a stab in the dark....his success has more to do with what team picks him and the circumstance under which he is picked.

I think that at minimum, he'll be a solid starter, but there is no way to know. He could show regular flashes of HOFer like Bo Jackson & wind up like... Well, Bo Jackson.

Nobody knows what kind of career he'll have, and honestly it isn't a factor for me.

He can't step in and start right now, and we have other needs that are just as pressing.

We've already got projects and youth at the quarterback position and don't need anymore of either.

There's a boatload of guys we won't draft this year that will have great careers. That doesn't concern me.

Making the most of the guys that we do draft does.

OK, I'll take a stab.

Assuming Cam ends up in a perfect situation, with good coaching, and is able to fully meet his potential, then I believe he can be an above average starter in this league for a few years in this league.

Pretty much.

Personally, I have no problems with projection, but only if I see the right signs. For example, there are problem with Jake Locker's accuracy, but if he shows in his pro day that he can in fact be accurate and gives a good reason why he couldn't improve his accuracy in college, he has given me hope that he could succeed in the NFL. Newton on the other hand needs to answer questions about leadership and intelligence. I can't make a call about whether or not he has those tools, because for me to do that, I need to actually sit down with him for a long period of time in order to gauge where he is. Once again, I challenge the huddle to give me a reason; a reason why they are so convinced that Newton will be a complete legend/bust. I don't think anyone even has an accurate estimate of what Newton will be in the NFL.

My guess/opinion, because you asked

Successful if:

1. Loses the papa-agent, entourage and posse

2. Seriously dedicates himself to learning his craft, like Freeman did right out of college and Vick did out of prison

3. (in conjunction with 2.) Realizes down in his bones that athleticism alone isn't enough to win championships in the pros. That can be a difficult thing for someone with that much talent.

Could be elite if he realizes those things early (now). If not, he'll be VY 2.0 until a life changing event causes him to re-evaluate his approach to both life and football (i.e. grow TFU). It could be immediately, it could be 5 years. Nobody is arguing against this guy's talent. So far, it's like a used car salesman taught him his morals and self-sales pitch. That won't work long term.

There was no "inconsistent starter due to potential ceiling" option, so I went with "stable starter", because he'll see the field and win some games for somebody. He just needs to mature before he'll be any better than that. Could be 1 year, could be 5 years, could be with another team, could be never. I know if he ever gets his mind right, I want him on my team. Of course I could say that about VY or JMac just as easy, the difference being Cam hasn't been exposed to pro-level expectations yet.

^Predicting how all that will turn out is why the GMs/scouts get paid the big bucks.

Like so many prospects before him... tons of potential... is unknown as to whether he will strive to reach it. He may love football, but the off-field flags would make me wary of his long-term commitment to the profession.
