Newton’s pro day shows why he shoulf be No 1

I don't want a QB who might be ready in 6-24 months, I want a player who starts week 1 and has a positive impact. Neither Gabbert nor Newton fit that bill, IMO.

As to starting, it doesn't have to be an all or nothing affair. We are going to have a veteran QB on the roster, be it Moore, Palmer, Volek or whoever. Give the rookie 1 series a game, or more, depending on how they are progressing week-to-week. This gives them a chance to get used to the speed of the game and reading defenses before they are thrown into a starting position.

NO-ROOKIE-QB-2011-PERIOD! What part of that don't you all understand? This is a weak-ass class and you all just grasping at straws out of desperation.

The entire draft class is relatively weak across the board. There'll be some good players out of it, but most of the successful ones will all be guys that fulfilled on potential. There is no sure fire "he's gonna blow the league up" talent.

That being said, Cam has arguably the greatest potential out of everyone available. Additionally, even if he came in and wasn't very good as a rookie, he's better than what we have and our biggest needs are 1)QB 2)DT (possible starter on OL and CB2 are also slight concerns IMO). So we need to go with the position that give the biggest impact both short term and long term - QB.

Was just listning to John Clayton on ESPN aand they were talking about QBs and where they might go.

General thinking is that Cincy would rather let Palmer retire than trade him. McNabb is reportedly getting interest from Minnesota and Arizona. Minnesota considered the best choice and where he would be the best fit. Problem is that there won't be a decision until after the draft. Hasselback will likely go back to Seattle.

So other than a guy like Volek, who really is a go no where do nothing kind of guy, exactly what free agent quarterback are we getting instead of Newton or Gabbert.

I hear people saying that is how we will go but honestlyy if there is no QB worth the number 1 pick, there is no body out there who we can realistically get who woul be worth trading for. C.mon those who want a FA, who exactly is worth trading for.

If we don't draft anyone expect Moore and Clausen to be the guys we go with in 2011. I don't think I could take that.

As Fred Sanford used to say: Elizabeth, I am coming to be with you. This is the big one..................

We could always try for a Gradkowski or Dennis Dixon train... :arf:

How do you figure that?

Did you see Clausen?

That's how.

I've mentioned before, but even if Cam can't read a defense or the OL collapses, he is athletic enough to escape and make a play out of nothing. That is better than what we have.

So assuming neither one makes any progress from 2010...

JC = First read, no, second read, no, throw out of bounds.

CN = First read, no, run.

How does that make Cam any better or worse?

Oh yeah, that's right, because running QBs fumble about 3x more than pocket passers.

After the combine it was all about Newton "not having his own receivers" (dumb excuse, given that no one else did either, but okay).

Fast forward to today. He has "his" receivers, a familiar setting, no pass rush, no defenders, and yet still managed to throw a higher percentage of incompletions than prior "elite" quarterbacks did at their pro days.

That doesn't solidify anything for me :nonod:

If we take him, I'll hope that it's the right pick, but I'm far from convinced of that right now.

clearly there were 5 drops of those incomplete balls so that makes cam 55 for 60, plus he was throwing into a pretty stiff wind, but i guess that means nothing to Mr. Scot

    • Now now now, I wouldn't say there is no logic, but there's just not a lot of in-depth thought put into Barnwell's  "analysis." Now to be fair to him (and other national writers), pre-season team rankings are basically clickbait. And...Barnwell, himself, said that "there's a lot of projection here." He basically admits that he doesn't know how the hell things are going to turn out with our receiver group. He also said that "I find myself" more intrigued by Coker than Legette; that does not mean that he said that fans should be, or that Coker will even be better than Legette (regardless of ESPN's per-route-run stat). So, yeah, Barnwell said some things, but even he has to basically admit that he doesn't know how bad or good that our playmakers will be in 2025.  Overall, what Barnwell is basically thinking is that the Panthers have gotten worse at the offensive skill positions, and baked into that is that others have gotten better. That's the argument in July (meaning, please don't give this any more weight than it's due). I would personally be surprised (not shocked) if we end up worse than the Titans, Pats and Giants at least. Once you throw in the Bills, Giants, Jets, Steelers, and even the Chargers, I personally think there are several teams' skill groups that may end up ranked lower than ours by the end of 2025.  @kungfoodudeis one of my dudes, but like others he is over the tipping point. He's had enough. Seeing is believing. I will say this though: Barnwell's piece is less about logic than just good ol' opinion. And to be honest, he might as well be a Huddler throwing out sh¡t in the summer based upon nothing but good feels or bad feels.  Our offense as a whole (just like any other team's) is going to depend upon the play of the O-line and especially the QB. How you can even rank the skill positions without expressly baking those two things in the cake is beyond me. I would dare say that that's not even logical.
    • Football is not the professional sport where timidness and apprehension are justly rewarded.
    • Bryce Young had a super high floor definitely at least won't be a bust safe pick we allegedly had seen in some time.......and went on to have one of the worst rookie seasons of all time.  They are all lotto picks.  And that is especially true for whatever they will be day 1 in the NFL.  I don't think Tmac is a sure thing year 1.  It's not like we watched him do his thing in the SEC.  He was a PAC12 guy.  I'm sure it will take time
