Hindsight is 20/20, no?

No. These guys were clear cut ready for the NFL and were regarded as such. EVERY QB in this draft has as many worries as they do talent or 'Potential'.

BTW know the #1 thing that keeps franchises from succeeding? 'Potential'. More often than not when the #1 asset they have is Potential, they don't ever reach it.

Don't reach this year, trade down stock up on picks. Draft whomever then trade for or sign a veteran. Take a QB next year.

So you told me what keeps franchises from succeeding so tell me what makes them succeed?

The above is NOT true about Stafford and Ryan, its easy to say it now because people know how they turned out BUT they had their own question marks and doubters. Saying now "these guys were clear cut ready....." after the fact is hindsight bias.

There weren't many question marks with Ryan, but there definitely were with Stafford. He was never as good as advertised at Georgia especially with immense talent. A lot of people thought he was the next bust with the big arm. Only knock on Ryan was his downfield velocity, and that definitely is not a problem in hindsight.

.........c) fug it Jimmy sucks, we have to draft one of them.

.............Option C is a perfectly valid opinion, it is just one that I don't happen to share. I think we still have potential in our current QB corps. I don't see the need to spend the number 1 pick on a position when we don't even know what we have there already. We know we have jackpoo at DT and there is a guy sitting right there who is as much of a slam dunk as any DT (excluding Suh) coming out in recent memory.

Besides, maybe Clausen, the current QB corps does NOT have potential. Obviously that is a place were we and others have different opinions. If Hurney, Rivera, etc think Cam is a significant upgrade over Clausen then despite "not knowing what we have" you still have to pick Cam. Then if Clausen does pan out thats even better.

Regarding drafting a DT.... the Panthers defense is not bad despite the hole at that position. In addition, with Rivera and McDermott, they shouldnt have any problems having an even better unit even if they dont draft a DT.

People are so worried about setting the franchise back by drafting Cam, yet passing on ANOTHER QB to go position player could just as easily set it back more.

Just becuase you may think they are an upgrade over what you have, you do not necessarily use the #1 pick on a QB.

    • Whoever you get has to be able to shoot a 3 for spacing purposes, especially if you want to replace Miles at 4 with Moose and run a different center.    I like the Miles for Giannis trade idea but where do you put him? At center?    Can you imagine a double screen and roll/slip with with Lamelo, Giannis and Kon... 👀   If you do that trade you need another free agent / draft pick to play at 4 that can stretch the floor otherwise I don't think it works.
    • I like it. I really like getting smart players and for such a hybrid type it's going to take one of those. You don't get into Annapolis on a pure athletics scholarship ever. The year you go in you are one of only 100 candidates (or thereabouts) with massive factors of scholarship, community service, character and commitment. Pair that with the tape and youch. Might need to swing earlier than later. One question, though, what about his military service requirements? Staubach had to wait out his required active service time, others have been given recruitment type positions in the off season. Not to mention that as an officer (as all Academy grads will become) he could be called to active duty at any time, especially with our current president's proclivity for sending in the Navy.
