This year's crop of quarterbacks...

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

I don't think so. They don't have enough time to evaluate everybody. I'm sure they evaluate some late round talent but I seriously doubt a GM is doing too much work on Cam Newton or Blaine Gabbert if they aren't in need of a QB. If they are they should be fired for wasting resources.

So say your the GM of the Colts, and a week before the draft Peyton gets in a car wreck and has his arm amputated.

Or you are the GM of the Steelers, and Big Ben is being held on rape charges and this time they have DNA.

You better damn well hope you've done your homework on every QB in the draft. That is why you scout every player coming out, whether its a position of need, or not. You never know what can happen, especially in the offseason.

No they do. They have to due to the fact that anything could happen. Also, Brady & Manning arent getting any younger. They have several yeas left yes but imagine what Newton or Gabbert would be like if they could hold the clip board for 2-3 years with those two.

the Article is 100% dead on. Richardson and Panther fans wanted #1 to get one guy, Andrew Luck. He stayed in school so now Panther fans want to reach for obviously lesser QB's in hopes they turn out to be something. That is not the way to build a franchise, that is how you ruin one.

Trade down.

You are spot on too. We should not reach for obviously

lesser QB's this year. Next year there will be 3 QB's who

are better then what is available this year. With no #2

pick this year we will probably be picking in the top 3 next year.

Start building a solid team right now with Darius as your keystone.

Mr Scot was a Delhomme backer. His QB eye is blacker than Glass Joes

Hell, I was a Delhomme backer too, but then again, I'm a sucker for an underdog/overachiever.

This brings up a pretty good question though...If Delhomme could get us to a Superbowl, then why the hell couldn't Cam Newton do it? Jake proved that your QB doesn't have to be mechanically perfect to win football games, and there was nothing elite about that guy, talent wise. At least we can all agree with Cam is on a whole different level as far as physical ability, plus he seems to have the IT factor as well.

If you are a GM that doesn't need a QB, have some balls and let the reporter attribute the quote to you by name.

Not talking about this specific case, but I sometimes wonder if some of these "decision maker" quotes are made up. New York Times reporters have lied, so it wouldn't surprise me if there is some of that going on in sports reporting.

Draft talk at this time of year would make a polygraph expert's head spin.

It's not all lies, but it's not all truth either. And when it says, "league source" it could be anyone from an unnamed GM to some guy's agent.

You also have to figure in that what people say a lot of times is a judgment call, so even if they're not lying about it, they might be wrong.

Got all that? :willy_nilly:

The way I generally handle it is essentially to make mental notes of everything I hear, see how much of it has corroboration, and go from there.

You can pick what to believe and what not to, but in the end you won't know what was really true and what wasn't until much, much later.

Whisenhunt isn't the GM, but he's a funny case. He's talking down the current crop available at a time when his team badly needs one.

Best guess on that is that he doesn't think either of the top two will fall to them, he isn't interested in the others, and maybe he wants to prepare the fanbase for the possibility that they might not go QB at number five.

You can likely expect that if that happens, we'll be able to hear the collective screaming all the way over here on the East Coast.

If you knew someone was going to sell a car that you wanted, the worst thing to do would be to go out and tell everyone how badly you needed a car and that there was a certain car you had your eye on if it ever became available.

Hurney is trying to drive up the value of the QB's and Whisenhunt is trying to drive them down. When it comes time for a deal, it is whomever blinks first.

I could agree with that, but the reality he's facing is that there are three - potentially four - teams ahead of him that could take quarterbacks, and only two that are considered as the best of the crop (however strong you think that crop is).

The numbers are against him, and I think he has to prepare for all possibilities.

Think he might also be testing the waters of his own fan base to see what or how they would react to a trade up to number one? Or like you said, probably preparing them for any scenario.

I think about anything's possible at this point.

    • I mean I think its a bit disingenuous to call basically anyone here a casual fan. I don't think the casual fan creates a profile then logs into it, in the offseason, to comments on mundane offseason topics.. I dont think anyone on here would be considered a casual fan. That said, I get your point. My POV is from the player. They sign this contract, move their family because of these contracts. When Clowney came him, we basically had a coming home party for him.  So yeah, I get why we did it and I know that ultimately the owner doesnt 'save' money, but I can feel for the human side of the player, which is why I want them to get all they can while they can.
    • My guess is the NBA will either send Flagg back “home” to the Northeast in Brooklyn or Washington, or San Antonio so that they can keep building around Wemby. If I was a betting man I would take the odds on the Spurs. This definitely feels like a #1 pick that they will rig.
    • In fairness, she is ensuring she is talked about.  People really aren’t going out there way to bring her up.  It’s some weird poo.  She would end up getting talked about given her actions if she was 40. Bill realizing some of these high end “companions” got a game of their own.  That’s what I don’t think Bill saw coming.
