A.J. Green...Number-1 to Panthers?

So the latest mock has us taking Green @ the top, certainly wouldn't disagree with that move, he along with PP7 to me seem to be the MOST pro ready and talented at the top.

But with the lack of support around here for the "The Clause" would you be ok with them improving the offense around Jimmy to see what he can do with weapons and a less predictable offensive philosophy?

The thought of Smith, Green, Gettis/LaFell in the slots, Shockey at TE, our stable of backs, with a bit of AE in the "Wild Panther" and hopefully a cohesive and healthy line could Jimmy prove the haters/doubters wrong?

I can't say I wouldn't mind seeing this scenario play out...thoughts?

I really like Green as a receiver. He has some of the softest hands ever...when he catches, the ball just seems to melt into his hands.

But someone has to get him the ball to be effective, so I view him as a luxury pick at this point. We have much greater needs elsewhere.

who did this mock?

if we draft green it will be b/c smitty wants out and we intend on trading him once the CBA is agreed upon...that's the only way drafting him makes sense...i just don't see it happening...hurney just spent 3 picks on WR's last year...he's not gonna turn around and draft another WR with the first overall pick...not when we have far more glaring holes to fill

It's posted on NFL.com, I saw it this AM when I checked the App on my phone. As far as the WR's drafted last year, do you see any of them reaching a status comparable to #89? I really like LaFell and Gettis, not sure about AE because he hasn't played. I do not think they will be what Smith was as far as a WR who demands bracket coverage, they seem like #2's, and slot WR's.

Green on the other hand is reguarded as that rare talent in the realm of Moss, Calvin Johnson, has the size, and speed he's a "natural" as some would say. If you're going to have the first I could see a good deal of reasoning to select him. Worst case, we suck again, but we have our replacement for Smith, and we look to draft early again with another shot at a QB potetially.

An even deeper/improbable scenario, season's locked out and we get Green this year and Luck next year....WINNING!

ahh, here it is. was supposedly on Path to the Draft, Walterfootball reported it:

Charley Casserly's mock draft: 1) AJ Green. 2) "Marcellus" Dareus. 3) Patrick Peterson. 4) Blaine Gabbert. 5) Von Miller...

Charley Casserly's mock draft: 6) Robert Quinn. 7) Prince Amukamara. 8) Nick Fairley. 9) Tyron Smith. 10) Aldon Smith.

Charley Casserly: If I was betting on it, I don't think Carolina takes a wide receiver (so why mock Green to the Panthers?)

I really like Green too, I just don't see us going with him.

The 3 players I like most outside my homerism are Peterson, Dareus, and Green. I'd be fine with any of those 3, or a QB. I personally feel going defense is a better idea, but that's just me!

Here is another mock draft that has AJ Green coming to Carolina.

It's by the dude that ripped Cam Newton a new one.

Most interesting part of that Mock Draft?

Despite criticism of Clausen, there remains interest in the league for his services via the trade market should the Panthers give up on him too soon.

Get it done, Hurney. Get our 2nd round back!

and by "trade value", he means we could give someone a 6th to take him off our hands ;)

    • A rookie that has never played a snap and a proven 1000K NFL WR are not going to be viewed the same in these type rankings.  And calling draft picks, lotto picks, isn't some new quip I just invented.  take the big 3 Hubbard, AT, insert whatever 3rd Panther you want vs Kamara, Hill, Olave.  Most football folks outside of Carolina are picking the Saints there IMO.
    • You didn’t really address the point, just like you ignored the point about the RBs initially, and saying “they are all lotto picks” is just a really silly reduction because you could say that about literally any player rookie or vet every snap, every game, every year. It is well known that different positions have different hit rates, and I would argue different types of prospects within position groups as well, and that hit rates change the further down in the draft you go. Everybody knows QB is different and that, for example, first round OL have a really high success rate. Using your lotto ticket analogy…again…you are saying a lotto ticket with a 1 in 100 chance of hitting is the exact same thing as a lotto ticket with a 1 in 2 chance of hitting (this is an example, don’t take these odds literally). The point was he is no more of a lotto ticket than the 31yr old receiver coming off a major knee injury, and in my opinion he is better odds with a higher potential “jackpot”. Saying one player is an “lotto ticket” while another isn’t is just not sound logic. You have no idea who will break out, regress, get injured, etc. There are safer bets than others, that’s all. I don’t think Diggs is a safe bet and even if he was, weighing him over all of the Panthers WRs plus 2 1k rushers is just dumb. You can disagree if you want. The list is stupid.
    • Yeah, this is all projections of how it will turn out. Inevitability this list will look ridiculous in a full 2025 sesson hindsight, most likely. Still, I am pretty surprised that so many bristled at being thought of as having very, very lowly ranked WR and TE units. We literally have been for years. All you have to do is just have things stay the same and those are immediately bottom 5 units. It is easy to see why one would be reticent to have lofty expectations in the preseason. Gotta show it first when you are a perennial cellar dweller. That's just life at the bottom.
