PFW: Carolina seeks second-round pick By Nolan Nawrocki

So does Nawrocki believe we wouldn't have taken Andrew Luck in this draft if he had declared just because we've never taken a QB in the 1st round under Hurney's watch?

The more I hear from this Nawrocki guy the more I'm convinced he's an idiot.

Agreed. BUT, remember - Cam has a fake smile, Luck didn't.

Know how I know you didn't read the article?

Third paragraph in...

That's not to say he would never in a division with three legitimate passers — Drew Brees, Matt Ryan and Josh Freeman. Stanford's Andrew Luck was a slam-dunk selection had he declared early.

Yeah, I didn't read the whole thing... thanks for pointing that out.

I didn't read the whole thing because IMO Nawrocki discredited himself in his initial scouting report on Cam by knocking him (based on what he heard) for having a "fake smile" and coming off as disingenuous and scripted... anyone who has ever had a job interview has flashed a fake smile and been disingenuous and scripted to some extent.

One thing I keep thinking about is that Ron Rivera has been trying to be a head coach in the league for a long time now. Why in the hell would he draft a high risk player and risk his job, as opposed to signing on to draft a safer player that can contribute immediately?

Keep in mind that the decision is not Rivera's alone, so he's not assuming all the risk if Cam is a bust, he's collaborating with a well tenured GM who's already survived one coaching staff overhaul.

The decision ultimately will be Hurney's alone.

He'll most certainly take Rivera's input, but as much as we may like him, he's unproven and he's a coach, not an evaluator.

Marty will get guys to fit the kind of system Rivera wants to run, but the "who" will be purely up to him.

Exactly. Hurney I think should be sweating a little too. Richardson fired his sons, I doubt Hurney has more pull than they did.

We have talked about this before and in my opinion this is the year to do it. If he waits until next year he will be putting all of his eggs in one basket. Say we suck just bad enough to pick 11. Considering there are two QBs that u think suck so bad are going in the top 5 imagine if they were actually good (in your opinion). So if all these QBs are truly better they will be gone by 10 easily. Well if there are no more choices, since we don't want to reach we pass again of reach for a guy who has even more questions that Cam or Gabbert. Or maybe we pick up a vet. If we suck again the next year Rivera is fired point blank.

On the flip side if he gets a QB this year and that QB proves to be a bust in two years there is still time for Rivera to save his job and fix the position. If he waits until next year he has only one shot and it might be a much, much worse shot than this one.

Plus if Cam becomes great he is the type of QB that could put a coach in the hall of fame too. So keep that in mind.

    • I mean I just don't understand the argument. Baker and Sam both have been pro bowl QBs post their time here. And you just said yourself that is due to him having a damn good roster around him and they are well coached. You're even saying the bad baker is still there somewhere, but he is in a good organization with good roster and coaching that they are getting the best out of him. Why does Baker and Sam get all that benefit of the doubt but when it comes to Bryce it must be a BY9 problem, not an org or team problem?  Hell I got a guy below you arguing with me that Chark/Hurst/Mingo sucked because Bryce wouldn't throw them open. It's ridiculous how far the stretch goes.
    • Correct.  It’s really hard to get open in the NFL when opposing defenses gameplan and cheat coverage/routes on all your players because they know your QB can’t make certain throws/plays.   magically no one that comes to Carolina can get open or make plays with the ball in their hands…..it’s like there is one singular common dominator to it all.  BY makes playing defense way too easy.   NFL players are too good to allow one side to cheat coverage and not respect all the potential threats of a route  so you can dial up a great play.  But if corners and safeties just cheat coverage and know X and Y happening on route/threats….getting open gets hard when they just play it one way.  Getting open has a lot to do with the different threats a WR can pose on a given play.
    • Kinda depends how you look at it both were 3rd round draft pics.  Nico was nothing before stroud and tank came in with stroud.  If both were on the panthers would young have them doing well and starting or would their stats be low.  I really dont know the answer to that.  None of the panthers wrs have left and did well either but personally i feel neither of nico or tank would do much on the panthers.
